As more users become active on TechSpy, I have noticed that many show this unrelenting negativity towards Apple products. With the news of Macs being susceptible of viruses, many people have shown a "HA IN YO FACE" attitude towards people who own Mac products and frankly, I don't understand why there is so much hate for all things Apple. Is it insecurity or are they just misinformed? Or maybe it's just fanboyism and blind assumptions from the other side.
I'm not exactly an expert on Apple products but I have had a few of my own. The iMac G3 in 1997 was my first foray into Apple. Back then I was still a kid and didn't think much of it. Then in 2000 my family had a Power Mac G4 Cube, the one that looked like a tissue box. This was where I really started to get into Apple. Mac OSX was beautiful to me compared to the clustered Windows XP that was on all of my friend's computers. Next in 2001 was my first iPod. Fanboy or not, you can't deny the revolution Apple brought with the MP3 player and their effect on the music industry. Ever since then I've had an iPod on me at all times.
Since those first Apple products came into my life, I've had a more insightful look at the industry and the philosophy behind tech, be it software or hardware. I've had a few MacBook Pros, three including my 2010 Macbook Pro 13in, and many iPods including a 1st gen Mini, 2nd gen Nano, 4th gen Nano, 6th gen Classic and finally a 2nd gen Touch. For a short while I also had an iPhone 3G but has since switched my phone over to Android since the HTC Dream (T-Mobile G1).
Why have I owned so many Apple products? Could you say that I'm just blind, buying into Apple's never ending trap of rehashes? I believe it's more than that. As some of you may know on N4G, I am what they call a "PC fanboy" but really, I just think of myself as a "PC connoisseur" that is properly informed of what's going on. I will continue to be bitter towards consoles until they can show me something that blows my mind. So far with this current gen of consoles, that hasn't happened. PC is the future as far as I'm concerned. So you're thinking with my mindset why would I ever like Macs?
Physical Design: I'm a simplistic man. I strive for minimalism in everything. Apple products have a robust and solid feeling to their products; where Windows laptops and All-In-Ones have plastic everything, Apple goes the net step and uses a full stainless steel unibody design that just feels right to the touch. No more lifting the lid and hearing hinges crack because they are plastic. Another thing that makes Apple laptops so great is the keyboard layout and the feel of typing on them. The low-profile, uniform membrane keyboard feels responsive.
OSX Software Design: At its core OSX is simple yet robust Unix OS with a beautiful interface over top, there is nothing to hate about it. Everything is where it should be and powerful enough to get the job done. People who say software designed for OSX is not as good as Windows programs does not know crap about coding. It's lightweight and fast. From the time I start to open my MacBook to the time its fully open, all running programs have started and the screen is as where I left it. No pesky waiting for OS to start up again. OSX is light on RAM but powerful and uses hardware to the fullest.
First-party Software: For the average user, OSX first party software for photos, music, videos, etc.. are much more user friendly and visually pleasing than Windows. The interface is easy to navigate and follows Apples mantra of simplicity. So far I've yet to come across a program that functions the same while looking a quarter as beautiful as GarageBand. I mix and record music on my free time and I love the simplicity of GarageBand. On Windows I use Fruity Loops (or more commonly named FL Studio) but that just isn't the same. Apple's first-party software for OSX is fully functional while pleasing to the eye.
Third-party Software: This is where things kick into overdrive. Programs like Aperture, Better Touch Tool, Cocktail, DeepVacuum, AppFresh, NewsFire RSS, etc.. go above and beyond anything you could find for Windows. I use Better Touch Tool to its fullest for my Magic Trackpad. Aperture is probably the best photo editing and arrangement software. Super features but keeping it ultra simple like iPhoto.
Hardware components: Many people say that this is one of Mac's biggest weaknesses, and they would be right.... 5 years ago. Now Apple has integrated the latest hardware into all their lines of products. Things like Thunderbolt, though I've never used it, is said to be amazing. The amount of data that can travel is really ridiculous and opens up many opportunities for future products and hardware arrangement. Macs also support Quadro and Firepro professional graphics cards for Blender and other apps. A 5870 can also be configured into a Mac and that is no slouch. Steam for Mac is taking off with more games coming to Mac that utilize the hardware that people have.
Price: This is where things start to get shaky, as this is also the biggest disadvantage of Apple products. Luckily, my family could afford to get Apple products and since I've moved out I've kept buying them with my own money. It's just a choice I make for amazing products. The hardware+software and everything in between is worth the tall price in my opinion. Keep in mind I'm also one to spend upwards of $1000 on PC components too so splurging is not exactly rare for me. Yes, Macs can be expensive but you definitely get what you pay for and you can feel the quality of hardware and software.
All in all, there are many things to love about Apple products and then there are things that are not so great. What's great is really, really great and what's bad is a 'not-so-bad' bad once you take into account of everything else you get. My sole reason for getting Macs is because of the design choices Apple makes to ensure a great product that will last for a long time. I'll continue to love Apple products alongside my PC so I can never understand why people feel like they need to berate ALL Apple product owners to the extend of sounding ignorant. I'm going to guess 90% of haters have never used a Mac or iPod. If the community would open its eyes then we could all get along, one big happy tech loving family.

Great blog Toaster and a fair and honest assessment.
Well for me there is no "hate" towards Apple in particular because I have never owned a single Apple product. No joke. I have played with and of course know people that own these products and I have thought they were good but never interested me because of the way I use my PC/Phones. I have never used iTunes and have no need to ever use it. So that in its self negates the need for an iPod and to a lesser extent an iPhone.
As for Macs it really comes down to my familiarity with Windows and PC that makes me have no desire to go over to using a Mac. The third party software such as video and music editing are top notch on Mac and you would be a fool to argue otherwise...but since I don't personally have a need for such programs it is of little difference to me in the end.
With all this said on my personal reasons for not needing or using any Apple products. All of my friends and family consult to me before making any purchases in the Tech world. I have often recommended Apple products based on the needs and uses of the person asking me. If a friend has a MacBook for school and has their entire music library through iTunes and asks me "What phone would you recommend me getting? I have heard good things about Android." I would tell them about why I love Android and how I use my phone but at the same time I would ultimately recommend an iPhone4 as the compatibility is going to be exceptional among his other Apple products and better suited to his overall needs.
It is really the same thing you see on N4G with the PSN users that talk down on Xbox LIVE without ever using it for more than maybe an hour it is easy enough to spot an uninformed opinion on something like that and if you have never used the product you should probably spend some quality time with it before projecting an opinion on it.
So while most of that is just rambling lol...I have no "Hate" towards Apple I just find all my needs met by other products and have never got caught up in the "ZOMG NEW APPEL PRODUCKS!!" Fervor...I do however respect what Apple has done to change the everyday tech we are currently using and pushing the envelope to open doors to better products all around.
On an unrelated note, I would be lying if I didn't love the whole Apple iPhone4 antenna debacle. That was such a joke and the people that STILL bought it after knowing about it are Sheeple. I still love yelling at my iPhone fanboy buddy about not holding the phone a certain way or making sure his "antenna Fix" cover is on tight. ha ha.
Ill speak for myself, in response to your first paragraph, there are tons of apple users who I consider yuppies and not really computer savvy but they talk like they know it all And That I can’t stand. They are always pushing it in anyone's face what their apple products can do together and how superior it is etc, it really pisses me off. I personally have a vendetta against apple for lots of reasons I admit it and I have no shame. To each his own, but there are limits. And also I don't like that company one bit for ruining gaming and almost brainwashing millions there (but that’s another story).
Some think that the iPod is the only thing in the world that is capable of playing music, I dislike that mindset. or the store issue which is, when you want to buy something for a non apple product but the only thing the store has is accessories for apple products and gadgets that are nice but they only work with iPods/touches/phones etc that frustrates me.
On a side note you literally have almost every apple iPod product, but why? You hit the nail on the head. You might be a little brainwashed but everyone is in some way.
osx isn’t all that, in my experience programs that were made for windows running on a mac crash and especially in my hands. I dj and for me my computers handle torq, serato and traktor perfectly I know my machines limitations but when I use my friends macs or the radio stations Macs , I get errors, crashes and sound distortions and a lot of configuring has to be done to get it to work right. Maybe I don’t know the limitations of a Mac because I don’t own one. I push windows to the extreme a lot and I expect their os to keep up with me but it just doesn’t it just frustrates me. Then with the actual computer I can’t tell then it’s off or sleeping. Then I can’t close programs properly in one shot, I X em and they just sit in the dock.
I think you should have worded things differently in this "blog" and maybe changed a few things around. Starting from your first paragraph.
"Is it insecurity or are they just misinformed?", I actually think this is a very naive comment, because from my understanding the mac hate actually comes from people that are more informed then the rest of the public, most of the mac hate comes from tech savy people that understand what they are using and what it is suited best for. Not a 15 year old girl that says, "oh mummy can you get me the nice shinny white computer"
"Mac OSX was beautiful to me compared to the clustered Windows XP", you gotta be trolling me their bro, xp was one of the best os's that has ever been released if not the best, it was simple, it was stylish and it worked, not only did it work so well on personnel computers, integration into businesses was fantastic.
"I will continue to be bitter towards consoles until they can show me something that blows my mind. So far with this current gen of consoles, that hasn't happened". This is by far your most retarded comment in your whole article. Uncharted 2 has won over 100 awards and set the standard for 3rd person shooters and is only available on consoles, and such games as LBP, GOW and many others that are only available on consoles.
"I'm going to guess 90% of haters have never used a Mac or iPod", and I think your 100% incorrect, I think that most of the hate comes from guys that have used macs and ipods and their annual same thing the call a iphone and have realized they have been caught in Apple fantastic marketing scheme and at the end of the day thats all it is. I have used a imac for marketing, I used to own a iphone 3gs, I also used to own a ipod classic, the only thing I like was the ipod classic, the imac was shit and made easy tasks to freaking difficult, ios bored me and the only good thing about it was the app store and yes the ipod does do well what it does well.
I really don't know why people really hate apple, yes, I agree that they have copied some of the stuff but who doesn't nowadays, the competition has grown on to become so intense that companies are even trying to sue other companies in order for them to stop and not be a part of it.. paypal suing google for some BS reason, It's just that they are scared of it, that's it. I really love the apple products, my iPhone, my Macbook pro, I recently shifted from windows because it was killing me, the viruses n all and as far as the mac is concerned, i haven't had a single problem with it.
I really like the approach of apple products, their design is unique, you have the app store, more and more features launching.. I was just a little concerned about their high prices but after using MBP for 6mo, I think it's totally worth it, I find mac better than windows, the only thing it needs is more software developers.
