This is mainly due to the rise in popularity of Samsung devices - Mainly the Samsung Galaxy S3 and now the Samsung Galaxy S4. My money is on Android to stay on top for a long time to come.
I personally don't like Android, but Samsung is doing a pretty great job with their phones. Almost every person I know they switched from iPhone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 and some S4.
On the other hand, Apple is stuck with iOS. They haven't changed it a bit since it ever appeared. It was very innovative when it first released, but 6 years later it now feels old. It needs way more functionality. It needs a complete redesign.
Having used all three, I prefer using either android or wp8 over ios any day.
ios just feels stagnant, imo.

I am loving Android after getting an S3 and rooting it with CyanogenMod its amazing. As long as you got the right phone and then root it android is fantastic!
Currently running CyanogenMod 10.1 Android 4.2.2
