Chances are that the first life we encounter off-world will be bacteriological or viral/other in nature (depending upon one's definition of life). And obviously if there were a space virus that would indicate that life DOES exist elsewhere if only due to the fact that viruses must infect other organisms to propagate themselves.

I know nothing of airline policies or international flights but considering the "war zone" and other aircrafte being downed one would IMAGINE fuel conservation would be less of a concern considering what was at stake.
