Are Humans Becoming Domesticated by Technology?

The big question is whether humans are becoming domesticated by technology? The answer is that they definitely are. Previously people were more active. If you go back to caveman days it is easy to think of how active people were but you don't need to go back that far to think of how people used to walk everywhere.

When television first appeared a lot of people thought that it was the end of civilization as they knew it and in some ways it was. Instead of people getting together in the evenings to talk or play games or socialize in any number of other ways, they got together to watch television with friends who were among the first on the street to get a television set in their home.

As more people acquired televisions, people stopped socializing to watch television programs together and the first step towards technology's domination of the human race was underway. In the decades since, more and more technology emerged and with each new innovation and invention, humans have become more controlled by the wonders and power of technology.

One by one, technology has taken control of human. First there were Walkmans that controlled human ears and in many ways that made them become increasingly more isolated from one another. There were even instances where humans wearing headsets and listening to their individual music were killed by traffic because they did not hear the oncoming vehicle. Some people who liked to stroll along railroad tracks were even unaware of freight trains bearing down on them.

Walkman technology soon became replaced by MP3 players and then iPods and the human mind became even more pliable to the manipulation of technology. The goal of technology did not necessarily begin with the intent of controlling humans but before long, it became a natural side effect of the new sensory sensations delivered by the inventions that brought music, videos, and virtual reality into the minds of the human race.

As people adopted more sedentary lives and their muscles and hearts weakened from lack of exercise and proper meals, technology took steps to further control them with technology based exercises and equipment that allows people to measure their body functions such as heart rate, metabolism, sugar levels, BMI, and just about any other aspect of human health imaginable.

The domestication of humans by technology is just about complete. It soothes us to sleep, analyze the food we need to eat, monitors our weight and strength levels, entertains us when we are bored, provides our social life through social media, finds the perfect life partner through systems that analyze our personalities and desires, outlines our days for us, delivers work plans for us, provides education for us that we can access from the comfort of our homes.

No longer do human have to move to provide the basics of life. It is not necessary to even walk out the front door. We have become so completely domesticated by technology that we are almost incapable of finding the nearest restaurant without a GPS.

Technology is a great tool when used in tandem with your life. Used to control every aspect of your life is a different story. Anything with the power to make life easier often comes with the risk of dependency and abuse. So technology is like alcohol ;)

In a way, one can say that is the case. What I think is the case, though, is that technology has made people more wilder. Physically they have got lazier, but mentally they are wild, a lot more than anyone would have thought two dozen years ago.

Indeed. What you are pointing at, was destined to happen. As time will pass, our existence will only encourage us to build much better tools a.k.a technology. This is only out of desperation for the need of convenience and hope for better communication. It is each individual's responsibility (those affected with the after effects of being hooked to a technological bi-product) to realize and take the initiative of learning and adapting with advancing technologies and maintain the required physical workouts for the better.

Interesting post, hoping for more writeups from you!
