Who you gonna call (in VR)? Ghostbusters!

If you haven't been to a Madame Tussauds in a while, you might be surprised to find that the attractions have ditched the velvet ropes and now allow visitors to get up close with their trademark wax figures of celebrities, sports stars, historical figures, and other notable people. But for its latest exhibit, Ghostbusters: Dimension, visitors can get really close to characters.

The virtual reality experience opened a few months ago at the Times Square attraction. To be immersed in a simulated, but fairly persuasive 360-degree representation of a Manhattan that's been overrun by animated gargoyles and ghosts hell-bent on mischief and destruction, participants have to put on clunky headsets. They also get bulky vests and backpacks made to look like "proton packs." The backpacks actually store portable computers that power the VR content.

A blaster gun and over-the-ear headphones complete the ensemble that turns mild-mannered visitors into fearless Ghostbusters. Thus equipped, a haunting they will go.
