Setting Your iPhone’s Date to 1-January-1970 Might be the Easiest Way to Permanently Brick it

A fresh glitch on 64-bit devices running iOS seems to have caused a nightmare for Apple store which will have to attend to a pile of dead devices. The glitch is not just something that goes away with a reboot or a soft reset, but instead will brick your iPhone for good! If you manually change the date of iPhone or any 64-bit iOS device to 1st January 1970 the device will be permanently bricked. Connecting to iTunes and restoring the device to factory defaults also doesn’t seem to work.

I'm sure watching the video in this post many people will be doing this in Apple stores now :D

So, it's basically Y2k for your iPhone.

Similiar, but not exactly the same. Y2K main issue was converting dates (mm/dd/yy) to larger char strings (mm/dd/yyyy) throughout source code.

As for the iPhone bug, people are claiming setting phone to 1/1/1970 will brick the phone because iPhones didn't exist then. Well iPhones didn't exist in 1971 either and the same results don't happen. My assumption would be it has more to do with error handling and hardware validation which causes it. Someone probably hard coded it thinking no one would ever go past 1970. I am surprised it hasn't been fixed because earlier versions of iPhones had the same issue.

Thanks for clarifying. I would assume that this is such a minor issue in the scope of things that they really didn't put much thought into resolving it and/or maybe they had no clue themselves at the time of production. Very strange but honestly fascinating.

Would this not be the case for other types of phones? Androids and such?

Another reason why Marty Mcfly would never have an iphone
