Maglev elevators are coming that can go up, down, and sideways

ThyssenKrupp, the German steel and engineering giant, has created what it calls “the holy grail” of the elevator industry: a system that isn’t dependent on ropes or steel cables.

The story is too old to be commented.

Why in the world would we be needing elevators that go sideways?

Because you can engineer buildings differently, potentially more efficiently too. Skyscrapers are getting so big now that the lifts in them have to be extreme machines just to make the building efficient enough.

If you can have multiple lifts in a single shaft but they can move and get out of the way of each other, travel sideways or at angles you greatly increase the efficiency of the building.
