Massive 'ocean' discovered towards Earth's core

A reservoir of water three times the volume of all the oceans has been discovered deep beneath the Earth's surface. The finding could help explain where Earth's seas came from.

This is so awesome, thanks science!

thorstein3603d ago

It also allows us to speculate about all the rocky planets.

If this is true, then Mars may have large amounts of water beneath its surface, thus making it a planet that we could easily terraform and colonize.

M-M3603d ago

I've been saying this for ages. We have always been looking at the surface of planets, but never wondered about what's underneath. You never know, there might be some animals in a cave under mars that can survive under there somehow lol.

Raf1k13603d ago

@ M-M, there may even be life forms living in this ocean under the surface of our planet too. We know hardly anything about the depths of the oceans we've been sailing on for millennia. Who knows what other secrets our planet has.

jXales3603d ago

Seen the movie piranha ? ;)

cyclindk3603d ago

"We?" What do you mean... "we?"

I lay claim to the fourth solar-orbital-speck as my own, I shall call it, Forbit.

ironfist923603d ago

Ugh...colonize.

Why do humans feel the need to claim everything for ourselves, go where we're not wanted and rape the world for its resources and land.

We've ruined this world well enough, why destroy another?

Humans truly are nothing more than parasites in nature.

SilentNegotiator3603d ago

@ironfist

Who are we disturbing by colonizing mars?

Dark_king3603d ago

@ironfist92 Its not just humans man, many animals claim territory. So just accept that its a part of nature.

Trunkz3603d ago

Isn't Mars like -69c on normal days? I thought I read an N4G article long ago, saying we still wouldn't be able to live on Mars due to temp and storms.

Rute3602d ago (Edited 3602d ago )

thorstein: terraforming Mars will never be easy, no matter what we find from the planet's crust. There are obstacles such as 1) low gravity which means that gases escape from the Mars atmosphere to space and due to the gas pressure being below water's triple point, water cannot exist in liquid phase. 2) no magnetoshpere which means that the surface of Mars is vulnerable to Solar wind and coronal mass ejections, and due to the lack of protecting atmosphere, the levels of cosmic radiation, UV radiation and X-ray radiation are also very high. 3) Mars doesn't have a big moon to stabilize it's axial tilt which means that it varies wildly in the timespans of 100 000s of years. When the tilt is in extreme, the other hemisphere is facing towards the sun for half a Mars year and the other hemisphere away from the sun.

cell9893602d ago

Lol terraform and colonize? Take it easy there champ, we barely can get to mars after months of traveling. We're not about to get contractors out there and start building stations.

Question_Mark3603d ago

I really hate to bring religion into this, but wouldn't this give some credibility to the flood of Noah?

Maybe the ringwoodite was closer to the surface back then and a huge geyser erupted, spewing an unprecedented amount of water vapor into the atmosphere. That then caused the massive rains and flooding the stories talk about. After a while, the water would eventually drain back beneath the surface, where it would be re-absorbed by the ringwoodite.

A simple theory, but it's fun to think up stuff like this.

Pillsbury13603d ago

Get on the magic school bus.

hay3602d ago

* imagines Russel Crowe trying to block this geyser hole with a big-ass cork instead of building big-ass boat *

Qrphe3603d ago

It gives more credibility to the Kraken myth. I bet that space is where Nessi also comes from.

Raf1k13603d ago

Or maybe Godzilla is sleeping down there right now ready to be woken :)

Gives more Credit to Cthulhu:
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn."

Translation: "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

This Ocean is called "R'lyeh."

All hail the Prophet Lovecraft!

Orpheo3603d ago

Lol, you beat me to it. ;)
I was thinking of the Cthulu mythos as well.

Very cool and interesting discovery, though.

Jrmy843603d ago

Geez, you ruined it for me,LOL:-D.

Gondee3603d ago

I wrote a similar story in kindergarten, must be true now. Look theres evidence ^^ lol

alpha_joe3603d ago (Edited 3603d ago )

"JaggedCarpet" Unlike most comments in this article, yours was the most well thought out and intelligent comment here. Bubble for you man.

M-M3603d ago

"I really hate to bring religion into this"

You obviously don't.

Rute3602d ago (Edited 3602d ago )

Jaggedcarpet: I think your hypothesis is based on a false impression brought about by the bad choice of words in the article's headline. Remember that we're not talking about loose water or soil or gravel here. We're talking about cubic miles worth of solid rock composed of minerals that contain hydrogen and oxygen.

If you sprinkle water on a rock, it doesn't get wet inside. To form ringwoodite from precursos minerals, tectonic processes are required that cycle the stuff, melt it, combine with water at super high pressures, solidify it etc. This takes millions of years.

Question_Mark3602d ago

Actually, many rocks have the ability to absorb water, kind of like a sponge. They have many pores that are capable of holding water. There are even some minerals that can absorb water without having any pores; they incorporate the water into their crystalline structures.

That's what ringwoodite does. It incorporates hydroxide ions into its structure.
They have made artificial ringwoodite in labs and found that it can hold up to 2.5 percent of its weight as water. That obviously didn't take millions of years.

dota2champion3603d ago

how come we don't fund any money into deep ocean exploring

M-M3603d ago

Apparently exploring the solar system is more important than getting to know our own planet.

Dark_king3603d ago

In truth it is,as it stands right now every thing on earth could be destroyed at any time from several different things. To ensure humanity survives we should focus on being able to survive without earth's protection and resources.Though having said that we still need to learn all we can about earth. Will help us in the future.

amiga-man3603d ago (Edited 3603d ago )

Exploring the Solar system has given us a hell of a lot of information about our planet, understanding whats out there could have some quite profound affects on our future.

We are barely a spec in the universe and you want us to ignore the vast majority of it. http://www.google.co.uk/img...

SilentNegotiator3603d ago

....so we're only now discovering this? Geez, apparently we barely understand our own planet.

iliimaster3603d ago

imagine what the heck is living and thriving in those waters

Jrmy843603d ago

Its Ringwoodite so besides microbes, I doubt there's some really old sea creature :-)

iliimaster3603d ago

i bet theres a tarantulasrex down there!

amiga-man3603d ago

So maybe some really old Ringwoodite creatures then lol.

Jrmy843602d ago

Funny how I received a disagree when stating a fact from the story. Does anyone besides few read the material put forth? Its what Rute below said. Its Ringwoodite! Word describes the definition.

Rute3602d ago (Edited 3602d ago )

It's not water, it's solid rock with mineral that contains hydrogen (protons) and oxygen. The chemical formula of ringwoodite is (Mg,Fe2+)2(SiO4). Read the article.
