Intel acquires Infineon's WLS business for $1.4 billion

It was announced today that the Wireless Solutions (WLS) business from Infineon will be acquired by Intel for approximately $1.4 billion.

WLS will continue to operate as a standalone business during and after the transaction; Intel has pledged its support to WLS's customers and the ARM-based platforms they work with. Infineon will use the added capital to expand its reach in the automotive, industry and security sectors. Intel plans to use the acquired 3G technology from WLS in its smartphones, netbooks, tablets and other devices, promoting the "Internet connectivity" pillar of Intel's computing strategy
