Egypt prosecutor tells government to block online porn

Reuters: Egypt must block pornographic websites, its public prosecutor ordered on Wednesday, a move likely to be popular with resurgent religious conservatives, but eyed with suspicion by liberals who fear increasing censorship. (Web)

Oh so its not tech related... how are they going to block porn? With shipping containers? But one thing is clear, if this happens like it is happening in our country at the moment, VPN companies are in for a lot of Benjamin!

@gadgeek - What I'm saying is that if a user is of the opinion that it's not tech related, then he should use the proper methods to report it. That's what the Lame option is for.

this is political

Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud is a remnant of the old Mubarak system, a few weeks ago their were protests demanding his resignation after he let men who killed protesters at the start of revolution off the hook.

he can't be fired from his position, the new president tried re-appointing him somewhere else but the prosecutor refused.

this pointless move aims to take some of the heat off him by trying to appease conservatives in the public

And it begins; the ultra conservative Islamic undercurrent behind the Arab Spring is starting to rear it's ugly head....

the net is censored where I live, but the local big stores sell vouchers for programs that bypass filters

go figure

i think Admin of this site is not dumb, to differentiate b/w tech and non-tech news....

This can be difficult task for Egypt to accomplish. Such content is not so easy to be rid of. I don't envy the admins who have to enforce this mandate.

For those with obscenely large HDD... it's a "Firesale" everything must go!!! So grab all that you can - while you can. lol

I really don't see how its even remotely possible. The ability to instantaneously check every piece of content put on the web for pornographic content is absurd. Not to mention attempting to determine whats "porn" and whats "art".

Eventually everything would boil down to government controlled sites and there would still be plenty of ways around that. It's like trying to stop the rain.

It's not nonsense.

Although this is true, being blunt about it is not going to change believers.
