'There's enough about our own planet that we don't know... Why not explore that?'

We already do. NASA Earth Science in the US and the gazillion other agencies the world over are already doing what your asking.

But telling astronomers 'hey what your doing cut it out, go cure cancer or something.' Thats not their prerogative, it never has been.

Yes and as speedracer said something will come out of this one day. Once upon a time people in Europe thought it was a water of time and money to sail west, there is nothing there, no money to be made etc. They were wrong.

I assume you are an American? The research conducted here was done in France via le Centre de données astronomiques de Strasbourg. So in actuality you didn't pay for this at all...

And in regards to NASA, here's a whole bunch of stuff people use that has directly benefited society...

Huh? Its space exploration, knowing more benefits us as we try to understand whats beyond our own planet.

Would you rather live in ignorance? Because that doesn't benefit you...

Umm astrobiologists sole purpose is finding life in the universe. This is their real problem. Just because their science doesent deal with medicine or other flashy fields it doesent denote what they do.

Remember stuff like this when we wonder why advanced alien species haven't reached out to us yet.

As a mod if you are the first one to get to a story and approve it, thats it, the story is approved. No one else is able to share in the approval process and in a management contest that is a huge advantage to have.

Right now I approved some stories and they are still pending for others to approve as well. That was my point. How can a mod compete in such a contest like that when they have an ability no one else has one that give them the edge? Again if its cool, then it is w...

But the status quo already is fair, all normal users cap at an approval rate of 3 votes for stories, we all end at the same number ie 1. To go above 3 votes is impossible, it can only be given to you.

Everyone else plays by one set of rules, to be given a leg up, an advantage no one else can ever get, well I dont think its whining when discussing the issue of fairness.

Blogs, news submissions, comment contests etc have at it thats all fair game - but in thi...

I dont mean auto approval of own stories - If I approve a story its 3 votes to the 5 before the 24 hr mark. I share the management points with other users who will potentially give the story its last votes.

As a mod If I were to approve someone else's story, its approved immediately and no one else gets to share in the process. In no way is that fair for a contest were the highest management score wins as its an ability no one else has.

When it comes to anything dealing with management contests mods should be disqualified. Your mod status allows you privileges that normal users do not have nor can they ever get.

High CR rank is there for anyone to obtain, being able to auto approve, auto fail, pull stories back to fix them, those are abilities given and in a contest dealing with management it can only go one way.

For the record I have never had a problem with any mod or any user participat...

Same here. Where I work it really difficult for me to take the subway I have to drive. I hate it, driving in NYC is like the Fury Road.

And this goes for everything in life 'Playing at pirates is only fun as long as the other players are kids too. The trouble is, once adults with real swords appear, it may be too late to wake up.'

This longing for this unregulated where everything is egalitarian on its own and we dont need any oversight is a pipe dream. People will always screw it up by screwing you over - its why democratic recourse is so important especially in the online sense.

I remember losing 2 tb of data, luckily a lot of those files I had made available though a DC++ hub and got most of it back. But I never went with a Seagate drive after that even worse when they bought out Lacie as that was the company I moved too initially.
