Chapter 4 is literally ALL combat. The game features guns, grenades, melee, vehicles, bombs, boss fights, and more. Yes, it's a cerebral game with deliveries, but it's also so much more. The social strand is an incredibly well implemented mechanic. The stealth, the building, the traversal. This game is unique, it's deep, it's incredible. It's a joke to act like this is Dear Esther, and the delivery isn't just walking simulation, it's deep, calculated gameplay with planning and strategy. It's unlike anything out there. It's like a mountain climbing simulator was built into a sci fi, stealth horror, action game. Then layer in the setting and the social aspect and it's bloody brilliant.

It's sad that salty people have made it their life's work to ruin this game, but you can't change what is there. Regardless of the mass campaign to discredit this game, it will win MANY game of the year awards. It will retain a passionate following, and history WILL remember Death Stranding as one of this generations misunderstood masterpieces.

To me, this game draws a line. The people who get it, and those that do not. It has helped me identify the type of people that are like minded, free thinkers with the capacity to appreciate truly unique, high level, art. Then the people who simply fear what they don't understand. Those without the depth or the capacity to accept something creative and unique. I'm proud of what this game has accomplished, i'm proud of this game. In a sea AAA copycats Death Stranding is truly original.

And than you have positive articles about what Phil the goat Spencer said without delivering anything ever since he took over. But he is great at asking fans to wait it's seem from the last 2 years of Xbox 360 to present Xbox fanbase has been waiting. Wait for E3. I'm looking forward to the PC release of DS, if for no other reason than to see the Steam user reviews. You have to own the game to make a review, and if the game performs badly on there, then we can safely say that this game isn't good, and that over excited Kojima fans and the gaming industry as a whole did everything they could to try to inflate this game, all in the name of saving Kojima's legacy. That is absolutely going to be the best part of the PC release. On Steam, the reviews will be completely non-partisan, with the PS4 exclusivity factor, being no factor at all.

Not true, it's also good at delivering deep gameplay experiences, such as carrying babies, peeing, balancing yourself while you walk, drinking Monster Energy Drinks, and extending ladders to bridge between gaps. You really aren't giving this game the credit it deserves.

I'm going to be honest about Concrete Genie as I am with all games: I didn't like it at all, and I was utterly bored. I still haven't finished it and I'm not sure I'll ever be able to bring myself to. I can appreciate the theme and style, but again I was so utterly bored playing it.

Days Gone was decent, though everyone here by now knows it was far from my favorite game.

Death Stranding was brilliant and I appreciate everything about it. I was hooked, and the story and presentation were top notch as was the OST and all the musicians that contributed. What a production and utterly important and necessary game in general.

I'd say I had a good year with my PS4.

Death Stranding is amazing. It's very slow and tedious starting out, but when you finally start getting more into the story things start making sense and I could appreciate the game more for what it is. It's one of my favorites for sure. You can definitely tell it's a Kojima game

When people complain about it I often think they haven't even played it. Everyone calling it a walking sim for example. I really enjoy how the game makes you feel when you do those long hauls on foot in the snow and then towards the end it plays a song that sets the mood even more. It's like "damn, this is what life could be like" kind of games and it's great for that. There are so many weapons and things and tools too that people seem to neglect. There's just so much involved in the game I feel it's almost crazy. I also love that you don't have to pay for Plus to be online with the game either. Sony has my respect for that one. I can't imagine how much tougher it would be without all the help

Death Stranding wasn't a 1st party title, but Days Gone was good. There's also concrete Genie, which while not a AAA was a really nice game, and then Midievel for the nostalgia kick. Shenmue 3 rounded out the 3rd party exclusives for the year. Quite a few niche Japanese games came through the year, although it was lighter than last year. Overall, Sony's own output, whether 1st or second party wasn't as much as last year, but still decent enough, and most of the year was propped up with big 3rd party releases.

I wouldn't say it was a terrible year at all. Just not as game heavy on the 1st party front as we've had the past few years.

It’s quite correct tho compared to previous few years they’ve had a quiet year I’d say rather than terrible? Terrible infers they stopped selling consoles and people jumping ship. Far from the truth as consoles still selling in the millions they just didn’t have a new TLOU2 or big hitters like that. They’ve had plenty this gen tho so a quiet 6-12 months is fine by me they still been releasing games after all as mentioned above. Click bait over dramatised headlines at their finest. Of this was a terrible year for Sony/PlayStation what can be said of Xbox this gen 😑😑🤦 27995;‍♂️😂

That's because nobody expects anything of Microsoft. It's a foregone conclusion, every year, that Microsoft isn't going to do anything.

Sony gets piled on because they're the standard - the bar. Everyone expects great things from Sony, so if they're perceived to fall the tiniest bit short, you get a bunch of silly articles.

Microsoft is praised for putting a good game on Game Pass, and while nice, an IP from Microsoft that's new and original would be so much better.

Really? More click bait garbage.

Sony put out first party titles like Day's Gone, Concrete Genie, MLB The Show, Medievil, and published Death Stranding that sold well. They put out VR titles like Blood and Truth and Everybody's Golf that sold well. Still supports the Sony published Firewall Zero Hour with more map content. The only console that has No Man's Sky VR.

And that's not including third party support from Capcom like RE2 Remake or Monster Hunter that used to be on Nintendo, Ace Combat 7 from Namco that has the best flying VR mode ever. I could make a list of games that came out on regular or VR that don't support this articles narrative.

Don't bother reading the garbage or waste your time. And next year, we got more coming from TLofU 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Iron Man VR, Dreams, Sniper Elite VR, Crisis Vrigade 2, etc.

Ridiculous narrative. And then, the knucklehead is saying both TLofU 2 and Ghost of Tsushima will be obsolete when they will play on PS5. Such a dummy. 100+ million customers to maybe 2-5 million PS5 customers by the end of 2020. Where is it going to sell more? Go take business class. Economics. Something.

Long winded but true. They didn’t have a killer year true but next year is stacked. To criticize their “bad year” would have to ignore their ongoing projects. I would call
it an off year for sure but that isn’t relevant in terms of brand decline. The board members aren’t surprised or worried. What’s to criticize? They stacked the last year of the PS4? Most developers did that apparently.

- Days Gone disappointed.
- MLB The Show is a MT packed game the likes of Madden which no one wants to point out.
- Concrete Genie was good, but wasn't anything standout or exciting.
- MediEvil disappointed anyone but the biggest fans who had nostalgia.
- Death Stranding was so divisive that Metacritic had to delete 6400 negative user reviews just to get it to a 7.4 lol

I had more fun with their PSVR line up this year than any of their main ps4 games...

Death Stranding is a timed exclusive, Medievel was a terrible remake of a PSONe game, Concrete genie is like an indie game and MLB the Show is a baseball game that no one outside of the US cares about.

Days Gone is the only AAA 1st Party exclusive that Sony released this year. Last year they only had God of war, Which was brilliant. Where is Sony's famous 1st party output that everyone always goes on about?

Yeah. Your big ones that year were Bloodborne, The Order, Drake collection, and Until Dawn.

I adored Unti Dawn, and despite already playing through all of the Uncharted games, I enjoyed playing through the collection. Try as I did, I just couldn't get into Bloodborne. By 2015, I was probably just tired of Souls games. Unpopular opinion maybe, but I would take Days Gone over BB everytime.

Just my opinion though. I don't think you could go wrong saying 2015 was the better year. Doesn't mean this was a "terrible 2019" though.

I wouldn’t call it terrible. It’s definitely a transition year though, moving most of their developers over to the PS5. I haven’t gotten to Days Gone yet, and Death Stranding is just not for me, but it’s not like they didn’t release anything or release just terrible games.

MLB The Show 19 - 86 Metacritic

Judgement - tremendous game 80+ Meta/Open

Blood & Truth - one of the best VR games ever made

Days Gone - a fantastic game, probably the most underrated of the year

Concrete Genie - excellent game with a wonderful message

MediEvil - this was a faithful remaster/make and a hell of a tribute for true fans

Shenmue III - currently console exclusive and beloved by fans of the original

PS4 didn't have the 90+ Meta, unequivocal game of the year type releases this year, but it had quantity and quality. There were plenty of big games spread throughout the year. All different genres, different styles, and widely enjoyed. To me, Death Stranding, Days Gone, MLB 19, and Blood & Truth were 4 of the best games this year.

2019 also saw the early access release of Dreams, continued support for Firewall, GT Sport, and VR in general. It's been a solid year with a wealth of support.

Ha this shits just keeps on rolling. Days Gone, Dreams , DS, MLB the Show, Judgement and Concrete Genie were all great games. You may not have liked them but enough do, in fact I'd say they outnumber the detractors by a mile! As far as TLOU2 and Ghosts of Tsushima becoming obsolete because of PS5, did TLOU not do great business with the PS4 looming?!?! No Sony supports its consoles up until the end with amazing games!

Also PlayStation has the biggest install base of fans and the detractors always Cry this site is ran by PS fans but by the articles tearing exclusives apart or cross play, lack of features and how bad a year they had.

Ya know I rarely see pieces about how bad Xbox is as far as releasing compelling software. But there's loads of "GamePass is the shit" or how great Xbox will be at streaming but none about their lack of software. Nail on the head. I've said this before ~ I rarely see garbage pieces like this written for Xbox, even though they released games this year the caliber of Crackdown 3. Not saying that it SHOULD exist, but you just don't see it taken to the point you see with PlayStation. And, mind you, this is for the PS4 (one of the most successful electronic devices to ever exist). You should have seen what it was like during the PS3's early years.

In any event, I gave this silly article a quick skim and, sure enough, it is better to not even click Read Full Story. Very much a one-sided, waste of time.

Two games is a pretty good year for MS. Especially when the user base doesn't have to pay for them because they got their Game Pass for practically nothing.

In other words, it's all relative. 3-5 1st party games from Sony is equivalent to that one year MS had....oh....it's not equivalent, because the press has made sure MS got away with a terrible generation, and given all the time in the world to an exec who has released fewer games than his predecessor.

That's another thing that blows my mind! PS4 is the most successful console this gen by a mile and to me they should be looked at as the standard. But we've rarely see pieces stating that. No we get loads of articles praising M$ for streaming or GamePass. They haven't even rolled out their streaming yet but you wouldn't know that by the articles on here.

I was an Xbox fan once upon a time but it's not hard to see why so many fans left Xbox for PS4 this gen. To me if was Spencer and the higher ups I'd look at what's making Sony so successful. But they don't have to because they've basically got limitless pockets but you'd think they'd use that capital to fund loads of quality games. But they don't and to me that's unacceptable. See they didn't want to fund any more big AAA exclusives so that's why they tried to push the narrative that exclusives don't matter.

They can't compete so they are trying to change the industry. Regardless of what they say they haven't changed what they wanted to do with Xbox One at the start of this gen. They are just being more careful now.

Also lots of the media praise them and never hold them accountable. I wonder why that is!

i loved days gone. and LoU2 was supposed to be out this year but ended up getting pushed to next year. i can live with that - it gave me a chance to get fallout 4 GotY edition with all the dlc off ebay for 31 dollars....it's really fun game.

Why, because PS4 exclusives/console exclusives tended to be new IPs rather than sequels and the sequels/spinoffs we got were for more niche series? We also got a remake for an underrated PS1 gem. Not every year needs to be dominated with AAA releases.

You know what? Sony should release more sequels, and while they're at it, they should add monetization to multiplayer, and/or charge double the price for half the game of their predecessors. Apparently that's what the kids are into these days.

For me i put more hours in mlb the show 19 then anything this year. Just finished days gone and judgment was good. Idk what he's talking about. Was it as good as 2018 no but that don't mean it was terrible. Far from it.

Personally, I wasn't all that interested in the PS4 exclusives of this year like I was last year and in 2017. Death Stranding and Days Gone didn't catch my attention like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Spider-Man did. But to call 2019 terrible? That's going too far.

MS had the best year ever. X1X had 4K. BC in 4K. Cheap games day one with a sub they set up for years for a buck giving all this value to gamers because MS loves them. That one game they actually released....can't remember which one, no one is talking about it anymore. Umm....micro-transactions or something. OH, OH, OH(like a reverse santa)....they have the most powerful next gen console with Scarlett, so that made this year great....and ummm...xCloud and some randon assumptions about how it's going to work and how the content and service will be priced......and uhhhh......Oh yeah, they were at E3.....and......stuff.

MS delivers what gamers want....including that one time they released a game this year.

Not a word, but, Wait Simulator IRL. What you do is wait for the games and if anyone complains you just say wait for E3, wait for Xbox 2020 event, wait for the studios to prove you wrong etc. So basically it's the Waiting Game

Kinda agree.
Played Days Gone for a few hours, but it felt so bland and medicore..
Death Stranding is not my kind of game. Too many cutscenes and way too repetetive gameplay loop.
Concrete genie was ok but kinda boring.
Blood and truth was fun, but VR is still not where I want it to be.

Problem is with 4/5 years of absolutely great games you gotta find time to play them all. They had a quiet year no doubt, being as we haven’t had a slow period of games since launch tho hardly a bad thing PS4 is wrapping up not immediately but next 12-18 months so if they had a quiet year 🤷🏻‍♂️ They’ve got games to play and no doubt people haven’t got through them all yet been a serious amount of top quality games to play. We get more than 1 good game a year on PlayStation ;)

A lot of games were pushed back it’s not just Sony. All of Ubisoft games were pushed back into next gen, not just next year lol. Yeah it sucks but it’s always like that at the end and start of a generation. I thought I would be playing doom right now, shit happens.

Days Gone was amazing, despite the low scores by politically bias reviewers. Death Stranding wasn’t the best but it was still dang good. Destiny on PS4 has been in a roll and warframe too. Ace Combat, and Sekiro have also been great additions

Agree .. i mean it wasn’t terrible but this year in general was very slow and boring to me when it comes to games. The next year will more than make up for this one i’m sure of it!

I think Sony deserved to have what we deem a BAD year for Playstation. They've been absolutely flawless most of this gen. Playstation bias aside, because DAMN NEAR 80 PERCENT of N4G exhibits this quality...

Playstation had it's worse year yet which is to be expected... only 2 or 3 AAA games released and skipping E3..

No really BIG major announcements, not really any notable PSVR releases. Correct me if I'm wrong? I haven't bought a PSVR game since Astrobot.

This is all to be expected with Playstation gearing up for Next Gen. I think were in for a massive PS5 campaign soon. Nintendo had thr best year in terms of AAA software releases. But the Switch is still in its infancy. Microsoft had to basically buy fan faith back and did so with services moreso than games.

This leaves Sony in the best position going into next generation. We literally have no idea what to expect

PS Plus games alone has been stellar.
Sony delivered 2 Exclusive new ip's this yr whether you liked them or not. myself, i loved Days Gone and enjoyed watching a streamer play Death Stranding.

Even if you didn't think Sony delivered in 2019, it's 5 yrs out of 6 that they have.
It's ridiculous to even have an article with the heading "Playstation 4 Gets Away With a Terrible 2019.

Ehhhh I mean none of the big 3 had any knockout exclusives this year. I didn’t enjoy days gone or death stranding, found them both a chore to play. Xbox had gears 5? I can’t say much I didn’t play it but gears games are typically just ok to me. Nintendo had the very decisive Pokémon games which I enjoy but I can understand why others wouldn’t. Been a pretty disappointing year in general. Sekiro being about the only game I can think of that most people enjoyed, and that isn’t even an exclusive.

I mean, as a PC guy, I just dipped more toe into this generation with a Pro. I got to play Bloodborne, Last of Us remaster, SotC ramake, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, all at one time. It's been an awesome year for PlayStation, for me lol.

Hell, while I'm surprised as hell, I actually loved 1886. Days Gone is kinda meh though :/

Welcome to the standard end of generation play. Sony is currently drip feeding it's player base details on the next gen system.

There will be some people that won't buy a game from January onwards as it's almost guaranteed to release on the ps5 and Sony knows this so why not make the ps5 launch amazing.

We kinda knew this would be the case when they didn't attend this year's e3. They also didn't have that event last December, right?
But judging the whole lifespan of PS4 there's no doubt it's been a great gen.
No company delivers in spades year after year, there's gonna be some down ones .
I also think terrible is too strong of a word. Average is more appropriate

lol not terrible. Definitely didnt have big oomph in exlusives like years past. Days Gone and Death Stranding are great games that kept the momentum going... all cumilating to a sendoff with ghost of tsushima and the last of us 2. I expect epic things with those two titles. What a send off for the beast that is the ps4.

It's the year before ps5 releases. Of course it's not their best year. Besides, despite it being ps4's worst year exclusives wise, it's still way better than Xbox One's best year.

Me too, with moving home recently and not getting around to buying the major 2019 PS4 exclusives until very recently I haven't had the time to play those games, but there's a lot there and I can't trust the standard PlayStation hating crowd after God of War, Spider-Man and so many other PS4 exclusives turned out to be so amazing and a bunch of haters didn't nothing but bash them.

As soon as I get the time I'll be sinking my teeth into my monumental backlog, god only knows when I'll be able to finish all of these amazing games!

PS4 has had yet another packed year of games releases, there's nothing terrible about it.
Switch has had a stellar year, the best in the way of exclusives when it comes to all three console platforms and XB1 has been pretty poo, with a few fun releases, but nothing close to the other 2 console platforms.

Also many might not agree with me, but i really enjoyed Shenmue 3 on ps4 as well. Not quite as good as the first 2, but still waited a very long time for this game and was nice to finally play it.

Also, The Last of Us 2 was suppossed to come out this year and Sony probably didnt count on it getting pushed back to be fair to them.

six years of greatness makes up for that and I don't think 2019 was bad at all for Ps4 at least not for VR fans. we got some good exclusives such as judgment, days gone wasn't the second coming of TLOUS but it wasn't bad at all and at this point with all the patches the game is more than perfect.
