ATT: Sharp Galapagos tablets got previewed

The CEATEC 2010 IT Exhibition takes place these days in Japan, and both CrunchGear and Engadget managed to get a look at the new Sharp Galapagos tablet (which we’ve presented here). The Galapagos is actually less a tablet and more an e-reader, as Sharp created it specifically for easily displaying paperbacks. This is Sharp’s most serious attempt to tap the tablet market.

Pocket-Lint - Sharp Galapagos E-Media Tablet hands-on

Pocket-Lint: Sharp is just one of many companies that have announced tablet devices at CES, and we tracked down the two models for a close-up look.

The two devices - with screen sizes of 5.5 and 10.8 inches - are currently only available in Japan, but a US model is expected this year. Both versions boasts XMFD technology which adjusts content automatically to fit the screen. All content is stored on micro SD card, so you'll be able to access it even when there's no Wi-Fi signal available.

Sharp showcases Galapagos E-Media Tablet

Pocket-Lint: Sharp has joined the roster of manufacturers offering tablet devices with its new Galapagos E-Media Tablet.

Showcased at the company's CES press conference in Las Vegas, the new device is now available in Japan and is set to launch in the US in the second half of 2011. As well as enabling web browsing, the 16:9 touchscreen LCD gadget links up to the the e-bookstore service to offer you access to e-books, movies, games and music as well as newspapers and magazines. What's more, publishers will be able to send out sneak previews of new content based on your previous choices.

Sharp's Galapagos media tablets landing December 10, costing quite a few Yen

Engadget: Sharp's evolutionary tablets are coming, people. It's just that they're coming to Japan and they're not going to be terribly affordable when they do arrive. The Kin maker has just revealed a December 10 launch date for its Mobile and Home Galapagos models -- a 5.5-inch slate with 1024 x 600 resolution and a 10.8-incher with 1366 x 800 resolution, respectively -- pricing them at ¥39,800 ($474) and ¥54,800 ($653) for the Japanese market.
