HTC unveiled the latest member of their cellphone family, the One A9.

The surprisingly straightforward and bombast free livestream wasted little time in introducing HTC’s newest offensive to take on the smartphone market. Despite being named HTC One, the A9 departs from previous One series devices in a significant way. Firstly, and most obviously, the A9 features a completely new design aesthetic; new for HTC anyway. The new phone resembles Apple’s iPhone 6s to such a degree that one could easily mistake it for the middle member of a three-phone line-up. The new fingerprint scanner on the front does not help differentiate the phones.

Sounds good so far, so what’s the problem. Well the phone will sell for a not unreasonable $399 (R5340), but only if you live in the US. Across the pond, customers can expect to dish out $665 (R8900), a significantly more expensive price. Even worse, the Americans get a higher specced version with 3GB of RAM and 32GB storage, while everyone else will have to settle for 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage.
