Anti Trust Apple Vs. Microsoft

Fernando Blanco From Electric Avenue Says - "In 1998 Microsoft, one of the largest corporations in the world at the time, found itself engaged in a legal battle with the United States government. Basically, the government accused Microsoft of violating anti-trust laws stating that Microsoft was a monopoly and unfairly forced customers to use its own “Internet Explorer” to access the World Wide Web."

this guys article is fruitless.

he says that in 1998 microsoft forced people to use IE to use the web. but because they had 90% marketshare this is why the government went after them.
however, Apple forces people to use Safari but its ok coz apple doesnt have a high enough marketshare so people have options elsewhere if they dont wanna use apple software.

hmmmm....im sorry but in 1998 when i installed opera browser, i never once got an error message saying "you cant use this crap. use IE. thats what its there for". how is it microsofts fault for gaining such a large percentage of marketshare with a COMPLETE OS.
lets face it, if MS had an OS without a browser we would all be complaining because without IE, how would u access the net to download your fav browser. And what were Apple busy doing in 1998 while microsoft were wiping the floor with them?

and how is it ok for apple now. what if i want an apple device for its build quality and apps but i find another browser more comfy to use and i dont wanna use safari. am i going to have to buy a non-apple device just for browser comfort or do i buy an apple device and "deal with it".

the way i look at it, apple should also be in the same boat as microsoft. dont punish one for being successful and then not punish one who does the same shit but isn't quite as successful at it.

I agree. I cant believe how much crap Apple has gotten away with that would have gotten Microsoft sued everyday.

I think what saved Apple's butt were the usage agreements customers had to sign (check) when using their products. This probably helped them get away from alot and it took off because we see usage agreements for everything now. You want to use this ipod, check this box and agree to everything including itunes exclusiveness, or you cant use it. It just escalated from there.

I actually got into a debate with a guy once about this. He was pro for what Apple was doing and anti Microsoft. His argument was "with Apple, you are buying into the ecosystem and everything flows together, why not just make your customers stay within that ecosystem". My argument was simple, Microsoft is sued for trying to build that very same ecosystem even though they still, to this day, give you more freedoms than Apple ever will.

Well said. I have been saying this for years. Microsoft have always let windows work with more or less any other bit of software and hardware yet apple have tried to keep it all tied to apple products. If you want to put a video from your phone/tablet to your tv you need an apple products in the middle etc.

I have said for this reason I will always use windows and at the moment I only have one android device at home which is a tablet the other half has.
