Can we just say gamer and move on? If a person wants to categorize themselves let them, not someone else. I'm black, yet I don't say Black Gamer, I just say gamer and move on. Or I play video games, no reason to categorize myself unless it's for a study.

This is one argument i cant get behind, this is making a social issue where one doesn't need to exist. The term girl gamer is used to specify a gamer as a girl in what's considered an otherwise male dominated hobby. A recent article states that nearly half of gamers are female but imo that info is misleading considering they're including ppl that play candy crush and Pokemon go. When ppl say "I play video games", mobile games aren't what most would assume you're referring to. So with that in mind, if you said your friend is a hardcore gamer, most would assume your friend is a guy. Considering that, I think it's appropriate to point out that you're referring to a gamer that's female. In actuality its quite silly considering it really doesn't matter whether you're a male or female, but i don't understand why anyone would find it offensive. Its not meant to deprive you of equality, its meant to bring focus to girls in an otherwise male dominated hobby.

My understanding is gaming is a gender neutral hobby. but the term gamer came into play during the great Mobil gaming push that gave rise to the casual gamer. It opened the doors to those who didn't know what gaming was or had ideas of basement nerds playing dungeon and dragons or seedy arcade joints. During this push in the 90's it gave rise to the casual gamer. From this the lines were drawn from the hardcore gamer to the casual gamer. Many felt it was insulting to be lumped in with casuals especially those who spent hundreds of dollars on the expensive hobby.

Since the early 70's gaming was dominated by the male demographic majority of females didn't know or care about electronic games. It wasn't until the early 90's that females steadily caught on to gaming thanks to not only mobile games but various MMO type games on PC like Warcraft. The social aspect of online and mobile gaming gave rise to what became the female gamer. A hobby once dominated by male gamers now was infused with females and the term became synonymous in putting a spotlight on the gender that wasn't always a part of the hobby. For this reason for years games focused on the sexualization of female characters in a male dominated industry sex sells and it's what men want.

For this reason the landscape has changed drastically to now be inclusive of females. So now we see a rise in censorship, or female protagonist that equalize the strength of females to the levels of men. One need only look at Lara croft to see how much she has changed from the eye candy for men to the inspiration for women. Unfortunately the whole thing has gotten out of hand thanks to the sjw, and feminist Speakers like Anita. I suppose there is no longer a need to classify anyone as any particular type of gamer but if we didn't push back and reveal the boundaries that exist someone would be left out and not everyone would get equal service.

Imagine a world where only Anita's view on games are law. I'd be miserable. Imagine if you wanted to game with the boys but couldn't because girls must be included in everything. Like it or not everything changes when females are involved. Titles and boundaries may suck but they are a necessity. Imagine looking in your cabinet for a can of peaches but you can't find it because all the cans are missing labels.

I don't care about all this but if by chance you like to play video games then I guess you are a gamer. Regardless of gender.. I like wrestling and Charlotte is a fantastic worker and heel but I don't call her a female wrestler I just go with wrestler. It's obvious she is female. Life's too short to over complicate it.
