That's a massive drop - those graphs look scary as hell.

Nyxus2655d ago

There are several factors to consider here though. The big drop is mainly due to Nintendo losing the enormous casual market they had with the Wii, and the Wii U being their lowest selling console to date. Sony and Microsoft are selling more systems than the previous generation, and PS4 is on track to become Sony's fastest selling system.

kneon2655d ago

And I expect there is big drop in multi-console ownership as 2 of the 3 companies had some big screwups this gen.

ThatGuyDart2655d ago

Also, phones have destroyed traditional handheld gaming.

Rob_Ko2655d ago

yeah exactly, hardcore console gaming is probably stronger than ever.

mcstorm2655d ago

@kneon I agree but also online pay on all 3 will be a big factor in multi consoles to.

_-EDMIX-_2655d ago

A lot of people are disregarding that a large portion of those consumers lost are from Nintendo's continued shrinking consumer base.

yomfweeee2655d ago

I don't think PS4 is still on track to beat the PS2.

PS2 hit 50 million in January 2003 (released in March 2000). Just under 3 years.
PS4 hit 50 million in December 2016 (released in November 2013). Just over 3 years.

Plus as this article points out, PS4 is slowing down. PS2 was over 20 million in years 3 and 4. PS4 barely broke 11 million last year.

preciousdeath2655d ago

Took the words right out of my mouth. Another factor: the PS3 and especially the 360 had quite a lot of hardware failures and were re-purchased quite a bit. This Gen, the hardware is built so much better.

LordMaim2655d ago

"Source: VGChartz"

This tells me all I need to know about this article.

bluefox7552655d ago

Yep, the Wii crowd have moved onto smart phones and that's where they'll likely stay.

Deadpooled2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

Spot on. Simple but effective conclusion.

Also with RRoD and YLoD (although YLoD did not have as much of an influence as RRoD http://uk.ign.com/articles/... ), consumers bought their favourite console multiple times which impacts on the total console sales figures (especially the xbox 360, which from the link I posted above was the 'most used console' last gen). This gen there has been nowhere near as much failures on hardware compared to the previous gen and this is clearly shown in sales figures.

dcbronco2655d ago

Funny thing about growing adoption of phones for gaming is the "hardcore" fanboys hate multipurpose consoles but it could be a major factor in bringing people to the table. An Xbox One advertised as a 4k bluray player could eventually sell at least some casual games.

MVGeneral2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

Bravo @nyxus,
You hit the nail on the head.

I want to know which 3 down-voted that comment.

Huguinho2655d ago

You have just saved the fanboys mental sanity today, you're a nice guy.

2655d ago
mcstorm2655d ago

@Nyxus also most people who had a Wii also had a PS3 or 360 this gen they just own one.
The switch may change this but only time will tell.

frostypants2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

Yep. I'd have to see total sales at this point in the lifecycle 2 gens ago...so, say, total PS2/Xbox/Gamecube sales as of early 2004. The Wii was an aberration.

UltimateMaster2655d ago

When you add the 100 millions of casuals that bought Wiis and the 35 million people who bought kinects for the Xbox 360... yeah, you pretty much come close to that 128 million number.

Likewise, the PS4 has never been more popular and it's outpacing the PS2.

joab7772655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

As technology moves at an exponential rate, including streaming and the mobile/PC surge, we will see console gamers leave a bit. But not for awhile and only if companies stay static. The idea of console gaming has evolved tremendously and will continue! Ask Nintendo!

But they must also be careful not to push too hard too fast! Ask MS!

only if you don't know how to read them. (though they could have picked better colors to cause less confusion.)

If you ignore the WII and the DS (ie the massive casual market eaten by phones since then) then there is no "massive drop". There will be a year over year drop, yes, but that's true of most hardware most of the time, eventually everybody who's interested already has one. Sales increase for 3 or 4 years, then drop off. It's not a coincidence that the PS4 pro and Xbox scorpio are releasing at the 4 and 5 year marks when console sales typically drop off, they're trying to keep the hardware sales up.

This article is super misleading.

Junebug2655d ago

I like it like that! :-)

Fist4achin2655d ago

This article is super annoying bc it doesn't take into account that everyone and their brother had a Wii. They were everywhere, nursing homes, schools, day cares,etc... It was a huge gimmick that sole bc even the elderly could go bowling again without having to go outside.

MyDietEqualsGames2655d ago

Nyxus' post sums it up. Also, you can't take this article too seriously. It sources chartz. Lol.

TitanUp2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

I know people don't like to mention this but Call of Duty had a huge impact on this. I know people who bought consoles just for COD and now that they are tired of the franchise they aren't moving onto current systems.

I know that doesn't count for every missed sale but I bet COD being less important has lost about 10-20 millions console sales.

Mostly hurting the Xbox brand.

Ravenor2655d ago

The CoD/BF3 craze drove people who don't traditionally buy games or consoles to buy a lot of them. Losing them is kind of a holding back the tide situation. They were never going to buy tonnes of software and they were never going stick around.

What everyone should be wary of is a lack of growth, the PS4 and the XB1 have sold really well and less well. What will get concerning is if the PS4+Pro doesn't equal out to more sold than the PS2 or PS3. It means we aren't growing and that makes investors nervous.

Phunkydiabetic12655d ago

Cancer is scary. War is scary. Poverty is scary. Famine is scary.

This isn't scary.

Junebug2655d ago

It is funny though lol ;)

rainslacker2655d ago

I'd imagine a lot of them are still playing on the last gen hardware. It's only 3 years in, and it takes time for everyone to move over.

Others were probably Wii owners, who just never moved onto a new system because of changes in the market.

This gen's hardware sales are doing pretty well really. Software sales are in a slump as of last year, but hopefully they pick up this year with a lot more big games dropping.

2655d ago
Fist4achin2655d ago

I blame Nintendo... But also in Japan where the gaming market is huge, they prefer handhelds.

Retroman2655d ago (Edited 2655d ago )

Maybe gamers tired playing same She-it since 2006 Call of Duty, Halo etc.
Maybe gamers want actual Variety as Snes had.
I don't kno im just a gamejunky drunk off of variety instead of dried stale open world military mess again an again an again an again an again an again for pass 11 years going on.

starchild2655d ago

I think there's more variety today than at any time in the past. Seriously, I don't understand how people can complain of a lack of variety. Today's indie scene alone has more quality, creativity and variety than we had in some of the earlier generations. Even in the big-budget AAA space there's a ton of variety. You're focusing on military shooters, but there's so much more to modern gaming than that.

SlappingOysters2655d ago

All these points are valid, but it still means 128 million or so (they were conservative) are no longer playing consoles or buying games for that console

AuToFiRE2655d ago

People are growing up and switching to PCs

Night992655d ago

Na this is not a problem for traditional console's most of this people had a Wii or NintendoDS and those casuals are playing on their iPhones now.

Inzo2655d ago

Facts are facts I suppose but to say that console gamers have left the market isnt really accurate, many factors contribute those figures the biggest of these is money, no matter how we spin it, it will always play a roll, allot of consumers simply cant keep up with inflation. Another factor is the waiting game, the Playstation showed growth this December compared to last and that is thanks to the Pro with many console gamers waiting its release.

SoulMikeY2655d ago

Or the fact that EVERYBODY GOT AMNESIA!!! There was never that many gamers, the 360s broke down like ford explorers. If I owned 4 different 360s, and every person I've ever met has owned at least 2... that number drops by more than half. People forget too easily that actual players NEVER equal number of consoles, not even half. I've yet to have any current generation hardware break down on me, and I'm rough with my shit.

Bigpappy2655d ago

If the 360 didn't really sell, how come Xbox owners were buy more software than PS3. Only an idiot would rebuy a console when the manufacturer was fixing or replacing them for free.
I don't know where you live, but 360 dominated sales in the U.S last gen. It wasn't even close.
PS4 took back a large portion of that market because X1 seemed to give up too much power when compared to PS4. X1 is an excellent console though. Scorpio could bring back a lot of those power loving Americans. There are a lot of them that don't admit to it.

Inzo2655d ago

I agree but my argument is that there are contributing factors as to why people dont buy a product as apposed to just saying "consumers left the market". In my opinion its poor research.

zb1ftw7772655d ago

Never had any console hardware break down on me since I've been gaming with the master system.

Including the two 360's i owned.

I bet you are one of these people that owns dogs or cats and leaves their console sitting on the carpet floor while a shit tonne of fur and dust clogs the insides up.

Am i right?

KillBill2655d ago

I owned 3 different PS1s and 4 different Sega Saturns. Each having disk drives that just stopped working. Your point?

SoulMikeY2654d ago

Zb1ftw777, nope. 360s were just horribly made pieces of shit. Disk drives, fans, red ring. With how much goes wrong at whatever point in or after the warranty, anyone that had one that didn't break is in the minority, or more likey, fanboy lying.

Bigpappy, I never said the 360 didn't sell more than the ps3, don't be a dumb POS and turn it into Microsoft vs Sony. And it wasn't free after the first year smart one... are you 15?

Anyways, the point that some of these idiots are missing is that we didn't lose any gamers in the generation jump, people had to buy more consoles cause they were shitty. "Dominating sales" would've mattered if they weren't just replacing broken ones...

RosweeSon2655d ago

No chance they just all spaced out over various consoles... I'm certainly going no where... Game on!

Donnie812655d ago

How long have we heard that console gaming is dead? It has and will have to adapt in the coming years but I'm sure it will be around. Even if it goes the way of streaming there will still be companies putting out some sort of dedicated box for it, or trying to anyways. Easy access to aaa games through a simple plug and play devise will be around for a very long time I imagine.

MyDietEqualsGames2655d ago

"How long have we heard that console gaming is dead?"

Years and years. Same with PC gaming. All that analytical data sitting there on the internet and many don't even bother reading it.

nwo4life4ever2655d ago

I've been console gaming for 42 years and computer gaming for 32 years. Console and computer gaming will never die.
