A World Where Computers Think For Us

Before you go any further, take a look at the video below.

All done? Alright. With Google Glasses being the next big thing, I seriously fear for our present and future generation. Obviously with human evolution comes technological evolution as well, but shouldn't we draw the line somewhere? Instead of trying to navigate our way around a map, we now have GPS systems with the ability to plot routes for us. Instead of enjoying the great outdoors, we are enjoying the outdoors via video games from within our living room.

This isn't a stab at Google Glasses, but more a stab at how tech is slowly consuming our ability to think for ourselves. If anything, the convenience offered by devices and apps that assist us, has increased our impatience levels. Back in the early 2000s, online registration forms could require users filling in at least 10 fields before being able to create an account, but now, a form with 3 or more fields could mean a lost sign-up. Single Sign On services like Facebook and Twitter have added to that since users just have to accept the app and that's it.

Getting back to the glasses, instead of having to actually use our phones, all we will have to do is make voice requests and the glasses should display it in front of your eyes. In the video, the unit they demonstrate is actually embedded into the eye, so while the viewer may experience rocky mountain sides or a wide screen viewing cinema, in reality he could be sitting in a cardboard box and it wouldn't make a difference.

Another problem is that people will depend solely on the Internet (or whatever they call it in the future) to research their partners. With information sharing moving towards more limitless boundaries, people are posting more and more about their personal lives on the net for the entire world to see. This means any potential partner could do a full profile scan and make his game a bit easier. No longer will people rely on intuition or the 'gut' feeling. Dating as a whole could be eradicated because a program may eventually come about to make the best matches...something like an eHarmony, but one that factors in more emotional statistics.

The problem is much bigger than dating as well. With an ability to command everything via voice or mentally, we would no longer need to reach for the remote, go out to pick up the paper or turn off the light. Our lives and what happens around us will be controlled right from our minds. Imagine playing video games with brainwave control? Where's the fun in that?

The reality is that we are slowly becoming more and more dependent on computers to help us, and there is little that can stop it.
