A dataminer has revealed several details on the upcoming Assassin's Creed Shadows (formerly Assassin's Creed Red) post-launch content.
Ubisoft recently shared more details about Assassin's Creed Shadows protagonists, confirming that both of them will romantically attract and be attracted to different types of people.
Feudal Japan DEI LGBTQ+ Samurai, sounds very accurate for the time period. Surely a decision made only with historical accuracy in mind.
You have no idea what you are talking about, bet you didn’t know nobunaga was bi-sexual. Or ran maru his is often depicted as androgynous was a “beautiful boy”.
So yeah, feudal Japan had tons of lgbtq and kawaii enough… A BLACK SAMURAI! All without the need of offending a Caucasian because the world is diverse.
This story has cracked me up so much! Bravo Ubisoft, bravo! 🤣. So last week everyone was upset that in the long-awaited first Assassin’s Creed: Japan game the protagonist is black. But NOW he is also LGBTQ+ ! It’s like the Ubisoft creative team sat around a table and said “How can we best impress our Kotaku/IGN/Polygon friends and antagonise gamers? Let’s make it woke x 100!’ And then they all silent clapped!
Just you wait until the Star Wars: Outlaws details come out, there better not be anybody complaining about Kay Vess’ dating preferences and the gay droid armies.
Lexreborn2 is right
Go read up on Japan's feudal era homosexuality and bisexuality was a very common thing in that time.
I just have to laugh because the same people complaining about this are the same ones crying about wanting "historical accuracy". When it's clear most of the whiners don't even know history themselves.
Oh yeah!!!! What about being inclusive???
I'm sorry
..please replace the word inclusive with stupid.
Thanks… I was originally going to write Samu-Bi but then I realized it was right there already so it works better
You have to understand they’re incapable of writing a good story so this is the best they could come up with
Gotta get them brownie points. Now don't get me wrong homosexuality was alive and kicking in Japan during those days, and I've seen anime that have shown exactly that and been fine with it. I'm just questioning why this has to be announced before hand?
They were probably hoping to get all the whiners and complainers out of the way now in hopes that they'll tire themselves out by time the game releases. I doubt that'll work but that's the only thing I can think of
I know they’re getting wet to celebrate making a big masculine black dude do some gay shi
Twitter/X user 'InfinitaleComic', who has previously worked on Assassin's Creed Shadows, shared the plot/story that the game originally had.
This sounds way better and more coherent. Guess I'm waiting for the discount bin....
With sweet baby inc deeply involved with the writing I’m not surprised they sacked the previous story tbh.
Farewell Yamauchi Taka, the monk assassin we should’ve gotten..
On Amazon stores across the globe, Assassin's Creed Shadows is rapidly climbing the best-sellers chart. It is currently the best-selling PS5 game on Amazon Japan, Amazon UK, and Amazon Germany. on Amazon France, it sits at #2, and on Amazon US, at #6.
Interesting
Actual japanese gamers doesn´t seem to bother with all the controversy surrounding a black samurai as protagonist or history accuracy.
Shadows pre orders are pretty strong on US PS Store too.
I still feel their grievance. Their history is filled with Ninja/Shinobi characters, and yet when a game is made about it, the main character had to be of a different race altogether. The Japanese would wonder why the main protagonist couldnt be Japanese, like did we not have sufficient history of our own? Its cultural appropriation for sure, and I would Have been ok with it if we were offered at least one Japanese male shinobi to play as well, not a foreigner and a Kunoichi.
It definitely rubs me the wrong way, but I still want to play it.
I'm sure the Japanese gamers are upset about not being able to play as Japanese people in a Samurai era game. It is not like they have
Total War Shogun
Rise of the Ronin
Way of the Samurai
Yakuza Ishin/Kenzan
Sengoku Basara
Samurai Shodown
Ghost of Tsushima
For Honor
Shadow Tactics
Onimusha
Kessen
Nobunaga's Ambition
Apart from all those games I'm sure they feel very deprived
/s
Im not saying they demand that every game set in their country be played by Japanese. But you can understand why they would be at least slightly disappointed that a game that portrays itself in the context of actual historical events would choose a foreigner to showcase Japanese heritage. A Samurai of all things at that.
If you’re talking point is that they have plenty to represent them already, I would agree, but its not like cultural appropriation is limited to this either.
Clearly they are fine. If they don't have a grievance, don't try to force one on them. That's beyond disingenuous. This was always about your own grievance and not theirs. What's up with people on the internet deciding how other people should feel?
Only stupid people are caring about what others are supposed to believe and follow and what not.. a game is a game, this kind of controversy is stupid..
It’s a much bigger problem for me that an always online game is on top of the charts..
***I still feel their grievance. Their history is filled with Ninja/Shinobi characters, and yet when a game is made about it, the main character had to be of a different race altogether.***
There isn't one main character, there are two. The only people upset are people who apparently can't see Naoe and only Yasuke.
Edit: What's funny is she's literally shown on this submission as the story image. But, no, only Yasuke.
More like you own grievance. The Japanese made Nioh, where you played as a white guy
@TheColbertinator lets see how many of those are semi realistic big open world games that where not released over 5+ years ago. Yeah basically Rise of the Ronin and Ghost of Tsushima left on the list...wow, big list :D
Right? I couldn't figure out why there were so many downvotes for such a great comment and then saw the username.
I upvoted but c'mon people... "broken clocks and all that..."
Only yt people and their yt washed D riders care.one of the biggest selling points of noiah was it had a yt protagonist.they didn't care then but now they care and you wonder why.
It's the same people who swear they're the opposite of "woke" that are being just that, lol. We have truly come full circle.
He's a real historical person. Why the controversy exactly? Americans are so weird when it comes to race.
Never before was the main character or one of the characters been some real person from history. Also they always where native to the country where the games where set except this and black flag (welsh pirate in carribean, most pirates where european). They even had said in interviews that they felt that people could not get into the Japanese culture if both characters where Japanese. Funny how it was not a problem on other AC's.
@kaze88
Keep repeating that lie.
Eivor Varnsdottir was a real shieldmaiden.
You were silent when the character could be played as a man.
Shove your faux outrage, liar.
I don't get it. Is the girl not Japansese? Makes me wonder if people are just angry because there is a black man in it
Japanese gamers are excited for the game. Turns out most of the hate is from people that aren't Japanese. Yasuke is in both Nioh games as well as Samurai Warriors 5. No one was outraged. There's also an Anime about him as well. He's popular there which is why he keeps popping up in entertainment media.
The best part of this fake outrage is he leaked last year as being one of two playable characters but because of his name most people probably assumed he was Japanese and not the historical figure Yasuke that hailed from Africa. 🤣
Racists over on DSOgaming knew and repeated the fact that he was black and the game is woke long before its announcement.
Funny considering the comments on all their Japan social media pages and the dislike ratios across all their Japan accounts on YouTube.
Please don't take what you see on social media to be indicative of the real world. Negativity is magnified quite substantially in places where the loudest people want to block out the voices of everyone else (and people who aren't mad aren't loud), even if they are in the minority.
Most of those are not even Japanese people. Take a second to look at their YouTube videos and you will find a depressing number of foreigns pretending to be Japanese. Just use the Google Translate below the text and watch the copium
Well I mean it’s in Japanese so unless they’ve all and I mean all done some Google translate trickery then it’s a little hard to believe
The comments that are posted that aren’t from Japanese people are in English. Hard to believe someone would go through all that trouble when there’s already English speaking comments on there, most would just join in.
How is it hard to believe when you can literally use Google Translate and it even tell you, I am from Taiwan, Mexico, America and more in Japanese
Freedom of speech is important, unless you want a black character in your story. That is not allowed, says the anti-woke police.
Clearly as a caucasian I'm not doing a good enough job of convincing them they should be outraged...
Prime example of how the way you say something decide the response you will get!
The game has 400 pre orders since the announcement, which is the number 1 in the last week, if they had said 400 pre orders it will sound like a flop, but tops the Amazon japan best sellers list makes it sound so grand
This has got me interested in Assasins Creed one last time. Lol I am a sucka for Japanese history.
Here we go again mfs complaining over a virtual character, first eve from stellar blade cause they wana see virtual cleavage so bad now this 🤦🏾🤦 adults are so lame&cringe nowadays taking shhi so personal, like damn it's a GAME lol another reason why I stopped hanging round certain mfs in real life too always complaining about the most smallest shhi, I'm looking forward to this😌
The usual suspects complaining for other people, again. Misusing the term woke, again. Who knew?
I love how games journalists are going to bat for AC shadows when they had the same complaints for Ghost of tsushima...
Jade king from the gamer..
"Assassin's Creed Doesn't Care About Historical Accuracy, And Neither Should You"
And her talking about Ghost of tsushima PS5
"Taking liberties with Japanese history only to tell a story from a firmly Western perspective was one of the game’s biggest weaknesses, and it’s an inescapable vice that will haunt the series forever"
https://www.thegamer.com/gh...
The hypocrisy is out of control and so blatant.
ok and?
Are you gonna be hypocritical back?
Sure finding people with hypocritical or conflicting opinions isnt hard...but thats just pointing out they are inconsistent. Other people who are supportive of AC: Shadows were also supportive Sucker Punch telling the story they way did with the characters they picked. I'm one of them.
AC never has cared about Historical Accuracy. You literally fist fight the pope in the 2nd game. Think of it as historically inspired.
Yeah I think her review on GoT was off. Again so what
I don't think he cares about the historical accuracy of AC he was just pointing out what this "journalist" had said in the past. Finding the lack of historical accuracy an issue in one game while praising it in another only shows you can't take her opinion on either game seriously. You can tell she has bias, and you should question why it's suddenly not an issue.
See this shit, this example is what’s bothering me, none of the other stuff…just the hypocrisy
Ghost of Tsushima and Sucker Puncher were almost dragged across the coals by these up their own arse journalists who complained a non-Japanese studio making a game set in Japan about Japanese history were disrespectful, ignorant and gave off racist undertones. It wasn’t Japan doing this, it was everyone else.
Yet the very same people haven’t said a word about Ubisoft doing it.
Your example is perfect.
It’s double standards
So some people have double standards? Yes.
You are upset about hypocrisy? Do you want them to cry about this game, even though you feel as if she was wrong about GoT? Just to be consistent? I'm assuming youd wish she didnt make those criticisms. Sure thats fair. Do you think the people who are making the argument that Japanese people dont like Yosuke or claiming its cultural appropriation are also just only upset over hypocrisy from one or two authors?
I know right that one or two articles where their hypocrisy which completely stopped GoT from reaching critical and commercial success.
But they did reach critical and commercial success. So why are you upset like her hypocrisy was that damaging?
Politically, I'm left wing black gamer who does consider himself to be woke (ever awaking) in the original sense of the word, and guess what....
I didnt agree with her article on GoT or her criticisms against Jin (only criticism I have for Jim was being too dry) I fucking loved GoT.
So if you really want to point out hypocrisy, go right ahead. Just seems to be a convenient excuse considering the authors hypocrisy was just moot. Noone listened to her, the game was enjoyed and celebrated by millions including the Japanese. Just like no one will listen to the racists (because even If You dont have racist intentions behind you, Ive seen comments that clearly show they just are upset because...black people) and the game will probably be enjoyed by millions including the japanese.
@Huey_My_D_Long
Typical boot licker with the "yOu GoNnA cRy" response
If you have to be that immature like a sentence or so into your reply then I literally can't be arsed with you, you're nothing worth giving a shit over.
Point is we're talking about the hypocrisy from sites calling GoT racist or trying to give off that impression without fully saying it but won't say a thing when big publisher Ubisoft do it...clearly out of fear they won't get their special Press Release kits, free copies or the next big scoop about their next game.
lol "bootlicker" thats the funniest shity youve said,
Nah I think people buying into the "DEI is ruining gaming" are the bootlickers. Since thats the crux of this issue. People too pussy to be truthful, so they just dog-whistle. I'm having none of that People crying about hypocrites. Yall didnt cry about Nioh, but yall are crying now.
I don't believe you care at all about hypocrisy, its has more of a valid air than just admitting people are racist
"You can't be arsed?" Explains alot by your choice of words lol
You just love making assumptions.
"GoT racist or trying to give off that impression without fully saying it but won't say a thing when big publisher Ubisoft do it...clearly out of fear they won't get their special Press Release kits, free copies or the next big scoop about their next game."
wow, so they are more scared of Ubisoft than Sony? A big publisher like ubisoft vs platform holder sony?
Makes no fucking sense.
Heres a thought. Go find that author since clearly that article hurt you in some way and find what they think about it.
So which is it? Are the authors hypocrites or are they scared of the backlash from ubisoft but not from Sony?
Whatever is most convenient right :)
The thing is, Japanese people know who Yasuke is. He's actually quite well known. If you read at actual Japanese websites the comments all seem to be pretty positive and some are shocked that western audiences don't know and are up in arms about it. I don't think they care about the whole black samurai thing because they already have a bunch of Japanese samurai movies and games already and they're just looking for something different. Also, they seem confused as to why western audiences are angry because there IS a Japanese protagonist, Naoe who everyone (honestly does) seems to ignore. YouTube dislikes are a stupid way to measure something because of course any one can just go dislike it.
The Japanese have no problem with it? I wouldn't go that far. Yasuke is known, he is also known in Japan for not actually being a Samurai. Is this offensive to the Japanese? No. Should it be? It depends on how the individual feels. If said individuals know Ubisoft is intentionally messing with Japanese history to fufill ESG quotas; I'm just guessing the possibility of those individuals disliking the game would increase.
They "don't care" because it's not a real historical game. No Assassins Creed game has been. We've had games where someone tried to pass off "real historical battles that once took place in ancient Japan" that involved "giant enemy crabs". The last thing they care about is one with ONE black guy in it. Because they play games where historical figures are played by anime girls.
We bash on white liberals getting offended on behalf of others but then we go and do it here meanwhile the Japanese don't care. Do some care? Sure but it's the same here in the west too. Some care, but I promise you, most do not give a damn no matter how hard you want it to be that way.
In fact, the only complaints I've been seeing is that they're getting the architecture, setting, plants and small details incorrect unlike Ghost of Tsushima who nailed it.
Me: "Is this offensive to the Japanese? No. Should it be? It depends on how the individual feels."
You from later replying to an as of yet still unedited comment: "We bash on white liberals getting offended on behalf of others but then we go and do it here meanwhile the Japanese don't care."
Yeah... So, where did I say I'm offended or that the Japanese should or are super duper offended by this again??? I don't care how we in the west feel about this character in a videogame.
I will be clear that I personally doubt the Japanese are stoked about this. Yasuke is a known figure, but he is not known as Samurai. Japanese people on the web are not enthused... and white people are just claiming those Japanese users are fake because reasons. I know Korean, I do not know much spoken Japanese words and I cannot read any Japanese at all. So, I cannot say one way or the other if Japanese players are genuinely upset and I cannot correct translation errors or even see them in that language. I only know what the translations tell me and I can see plenty of posts that suggest they are upset but I can not confirm they are legit. Knowing how translators get things wrong (even digital Ko-En translations from Korean and English speakers) I can say that I don't know how accurate Japanese translations are going by some translators which seem to be of a higher quality (due to a lack of errors that can handle English to Spanish or Korean and vice versa in any direction). I only can speak to Korean to English translations (and some Spanish, French and well that's basically it).
I'd be upset if a game tried to depict a minority known to serve a tiny role in USA's history would be somewhat offensive even if it is for entertainment when knowing full-well that diversity is most definitely something the company making the entertainment is. It's why I was almost completely blown away by Elysium, because before wokeness as a rule in media was bludgeoning us over the head, I tolerated that movie very well and actually enjoyed it at the time it released (enough to buy it on BD). I still like the concepts of that movie even with the ridiculous "Mexicans deseverve greatness." And this is the thing... those "respect me" aspects do not actually exist in movie, it is only because of modern political contamination that I can basically only tolerate the film today. It has also changed how I enjoy older media with "respect me, for I exist" themes in it even if the victimized characters are likable and unduly treated, it's become annoying to see it at all. As I said Elysium itself doesn't promote those views if you pay attention. And here is where things get worse... Will Ubisoft be able to handle a story like that with such nuance that whether or not race relations are repaired; can AC: Shadows stand well on it's own story?
Ubisoft should've decided to make all the protagonists Asian like Ghost of Tsushima. Yes, that means the bad guys are also Asian, but now in this game the good guy is black and the Asians are good and bad. If you choose the female protagonist at least she is Asian, but here is yet another thing, her character is 100% fictional, like all other AC characters were before Yasuke.
The only things AC tried to get historically accurate, were how certain structures looked and sometimes how parts of some historical cities were laid out. Yeah, that's it! Only uninformed or totally disingenuous people are saying AC was ever trying to be an interactive retelling of historical events.
I was looking for this comment, not the dozens of others complaining about complainers and whether they're actually complaining or fake complaining.
I don't get the desire to preorder the disc version. What is the point of preordering a disc that can't be played without an online connection?
Especially an Ubisoft game.
*Double-Especially* that this is an Ubisoft game releasing so soon to Black Friday? Like... Come on, gamers.
Ubisoft came out and verified that on PC, You need to be online for the install, but just once for the install, while they said it was an Error on Sony's part that said their game needed Online at all times.
Ridiculous that in 2024 a cg trailer is all that's needed to convince people to buy yet another copy\pasted ubi game.
Jeez, so you telling me all those losers telling me Japanese gamers hate Yosuke were just talking out their racist asses?
TBH, I wouldn't have given a shit if they didnt like it but its funny they expected the Japanese gamers to reflect their own biases.
I will defend AC games to the point of absurdity, but even I'm here saying, "why ya'll pre-ordering?"
Oh yeah preordered with only a CG trailer and online to install from disc, that’ll show the suites what’s what..
Supporting Ubi-junk will only further entrench online disc install requirements. Don't reward them for their bullshittery! You have to fight back by turning your backs to these anti-consumer practices. They don't deserve our money, and even more importantly, these filler, copy & paste grindfest games aren't worth our time!
Pre orders mean nothing. Let's see how many get cancelled once the outrage dies down and we see that it's just the same AC we've been getting for years.
Ah, but they won't tell us that will they?
Looks like this game is here to unite us all. The extreme left can dislike it because of cultural appropriation, the extreme right because it's woke and the gaming community because it has to always be online. Let our apathy for this game bring us together!
Lol nah. you guys just don't know what cultural appropriation means.
Also extreme left are pissed about a genocide in Israel Palenstine and the French government cracking down on New Caledonia. Ya know real shit to focus on, not culture war bullshit.
Game isn't even always online either, although Its Ubisofts Fault for not making that clear, and correcting Sony vid before it got out, so I wont put that on ya.
Interesting, it was to be expected that a game based in Japan would have some degree of success but also Japan has completely ignored all the woke movement so they're looking at this with fresh eyes, besides they probably ignore all the Ubisoft recent issues, meanwhile US is showing a clear woke fatigue and it's where it's the least pre-ordered of them all and they have been the most affected with the recent Ubisoft business practices.
This may sound good, but that it's not pre-ordering too well in the US is a lot more worrying in terms of sales volume than having good pre-orders in Japan and Europe which have lower impact in terms of sales.
Why would anyone pre-order a Ubisoft game? They always end up going on sale soon after release.
dlc and season pass before the games eve launched - yep, that'd be Ubisoft.
Oh God lol. Remember to be patient with Ubisoft games folks, they tend to go on sale quickly after release and heavily reduced after a year or so.
as much as I'd like to play an open world ninja game, I'll wait for the eventual complete edition and bug fixes.. it's ubisoft after all
Even though the setting have bee much anticipated one for AC ... the moment I realized that this was helmed by the AC Odyssey dev ... my curiosity greatly plummeted. Odyssey was a good expansive RPG but it didn't feel like an AC game.
So the season pass news doesn't surprise me much. Will still check it out mainly for the graphics.
I am more curious regarding AC Project Hexe. Its less expansive than the recent AC RPGs (more like the earlier OG AC games) & is being directed by Clint Hocking, responsible for technically ambitious Ubi games like SC:Chaos Theory, Far Cry 2 & Watch Dogs Legion.
That's the cut content that is being sold back to the customer.
