Someone Accurately Recreated Red Dead Online In Dreams

Red Dead Online is a game that has improved a lot since it first launched back in late 2018. But it still has some issues. One of the most annoying is how often players get kicked from the game, often randomly with no warning. Someone recreated that experience in Dreams.

Unspoken1529d ago

It's been an incredibly slow news month. Red Dead and Fall Out have remakes in a Sony "game" that should have been out at PS4's release. Dreams is a concept Sony was known for, even though it seems like a rip of Project Spark.

Godmars2901529d ago

Think you mean Project Spark was a rip of Little Big Planet, of which Dream is the spiritual and literal successor to.

No really, look up LBP2, 3 or even one. See how complex they got.

"Project Spark" hahahahaahahah

majiebeast1529d ago

Project spark haha dont make me laugh.

rainslacker1529d ago

it's good maybe once every 3-4 years to look at what is coming out on consoles other than Xbox. There's a whole wide world of games you seem to be missing out on.

RedDevils1529d ago

Project Spark? Is that a turd?

BlaqMagiq11529d ago (Edited 1529d ago )

That "ripoff" of Project Spark destroys Project Spark in every way sooo...

Unspoken1527d ago

@Godmars290

Fair enough, but if we go back even further Garry's mod released in 2004,

...and if you want to get even more technical Unreal Engine released on PC in 98.

@Cloud
If you are only referring to PlayStation, then no I'm not missing out on much as I could simply stay on PC to have access to every genre type. Also most Sony "exclusives" are coming to PC and the remaining games aren't enough to buy into the Eco system. I don't think anyone could convince the PC player base to leave PC for Sony's console. But good luck. :)

I wonder if someone recreates a game in dreams that hasn't been release yet but has been show to the public, could the developers sue the developers of Dreams.

These "re-creations" are generally just small scenes from games, not the entire game, and zero threat to the real thing. People are being a bit dishonest with the use of the term "re-create".

The best stuff in Dreams are the completely original creations people have made. These so-called "re-creations" are interesting, but little more than that. IF someone were to actually copy a game from start to finish it would get taken down.

DerfDerf1530d ago

The plan for a lot of them is to recreate it. They just haven't had the time to get that far. Fact of the matter is the game allows total creative freedom with no way to monetize it so everything is safe. If you could monetize it that would be a different story.

frostypants1530d ago (Edited 1530d ago )

@shloobian, trust me, if someone re-makes, say, the entirety of Legend of Zelda in Dreams, it will get taken down. Any apparent lack of monetization wouldn't eliminate an IP dispute (and regardless, the claim by the plaintiff would be that MM is monetizing it via access to the content being a selling point for their software...but even without that, there'd be grounds for a claim). MM and Sony won't want to deal with that, I promise.

It's no different than if you went and re-coded your own 1-for-1 copy of Zelda in C and gave it away to people for free (I'm avoiding the whole debate over abandonware here, obviously). That wouldn't be deemed legal. You'd have to change it "just enough".

drizzom1529d ago (Edited 1529d ago )

Its because it makes for good publicity. "People" recreated FF7 and PT and it got lots of media attention. If anything dreams is a tool used for good publicity at the moment.

CaptainOmega1530d ago

The concept of intellectual property gets muddy. I’d say there is no legal action one can take against someone who say, recreates an entire Halo game minus the voice actors, music.. ect. I’d think of it like Minecraft.

neutralgamer19921529d ago

They can't do anything. This is modnation racer and LBP all over again. Modnation always had Mario, sonic etc

The only way anyone could have some legal ground is if its being sold. When these creations are free and user created there isn't much

It's like wwe games where people can create stars from other promotions

P_Bomb1529d ago (Edited 1529d ago )

Could doesn’t mean would or should. If it were worth it to copyright holders, lawyers would be ambulance chasing American Idol auditions and bankrupting buskers into oblivion. But they don’t. Homeless guy on his guitar doesn’t pay for Godfather any more than Slash https://youtu.be/N9pPD9H6sy...

rainslacker1529d ago

Copyright owners can most certainly do something. A cease and desist to Sony would have it taken down pretty quick. Sony isn't going to risk a lawsuit, and since they work with the game industry, they're going to have an interest in protecting publisher interests.

Even if this wasn't the case, content can be taken down if it is infringing on an IP. If you recreate something, and say it's a recreation, you don't have rights to distribute it. Fair use only goes so far, and the simple act of using the name is enough to infringement.

It really comes down to the court to decide, but even if something is changed to some degree for artistic license, it doesn't give free reign for people to copy others, even if all the assets are made by themselves, all coding is done by them, and they make their own spin on it.

Smaller fan recreations aren't likely to get slapped down. Most companies are fine with some fan work. There are a few that are notorious for taking down content regardless of the intent of the creator.

Dreams Dev Media Molecule Says Layoffs Impact Planned Community and Curation Support

IGN writes: "Media Molecule has said the layoffs at the Sony-owned studio have affected plans for ongoing community and curation support in Dreams."

Inverno34d ago

How self sustained can DREAM be when it's basically stuck on PS4? I don't think it's even gotten a PS5 upgrade. Ending support for what is essentially a game making engine is basically death. SONY did DREAMS dirty.

This is really cool, it’s a shame they didn’t do more of this during the first 5 years of dreams. Demonstrates how powerful a tool it is. I kind of got the feeling puzzle types of games were really going to be the best use of dreams for putting together a whole complete game. More ambitious things never went beyond tech demos really. Or did they? I stopped really looking after a while

closed_account272d ago (Edited 272d ago )

Yea, this is John Beech's creation.. I remember him showing these trains in production 2 or so years ago, so it's pretty amazing how far he's taken it!

John's story is pretty awesome. He was just a normal guy working a construction job, and he built Little Big Planet levels on PS3 just for fun. Media Molecule contacted, then hired him bc his creations were so good.

He has been a lead designer for MM, 14 yrs, until recently he became their new Creative Director this year when Mark Healey stepped down.

Beech is a super nice and humble guy, I've been following him for a few years now since i first saw his photo realistic "Traditional English Breakfast" creation in Dreams.

So you can see why this creation is the best of the best! I find Beech's story super inspiring, someone who did not go through the traditional route of game design training with nothing but a whole lot of passion and a hell of an amount of undiscovered talent!

Inverno272d ago

Apparently there's a movie that will use Dreams engine, but I believe it's still in the making. That's probably as ambitious as it'll get unfortunately.

Yi-Long272d ago

This looks gorgeous and fantastic. Really hope Sony reconsiders pulling support for Dreams, now that it’s coming to Plus.

closed_account272d ago

I'm really hoping they create a sequel that they can expand upon with multiplayer and huge connected worlds. This could be Sony's Rec Room or Roblox if they supported it right. It would be the best looking of the bunch for sure!

Honestly, I think Sony should put Media Molecule in charge of creating a new Playstation Home platform, utilizing these player creation tools they've developed.

I can only imagine how amazing a cohesive PS Home world could be in PSVR, but they should of course include flat support just like Rec Room/Roblox.
