Man this is turning into a crowed field.

Maybay1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

Yep. People don't understand that casuals make up the majority of console sales. Soon mobile technology will reach a point where games look and play well enough for consumers not to care about dedicated gaming hardware platforms (unless their first party Ip's sells a lot of copies on a frequent basis, which is why exclusives are very important). Future smart tv's will have the technology to play AAA games like Fifa, Call of Duty, etc. In 1080p 60 fps. And they'll probably (future smart tv's) have a simple steam-like interface with the ability to download games.

1859d ago
Al_Simmons1858d ago

Where is your supporting documents and links to confirm that smart tv's will be able to play 3rd party AAA titles? Or, are you just being gaming's Nostradamus? Even if that's true; That's still not going to take the place of a console exclusive. Your comment is cringe-worthy.

Mystogan1859d ago

This is a good thing. Apple has so much influence that it might ween people off of shitty mobile games filled with micro transactions.

Which means eventually more people will be looking at Stadia and xCloud.

1859d ago
Zeref1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

xCloud will be tied in with Gamepass. Besides the streaming part. It's pretty much the same.

Not sure what model Stadia is gonna use.

Al_Simmons1858d ago (Edited 1858d ago )

Bro/Sis, are you proofreading your comments before you hit add?

Double_O_Revan1859d ago

Starting to remind me of the late 70's - early 80's, you know, when the gaming market crashed.

KickSpinFilter1859d ago

No way in hell does it have the same "feeling" as the 80' GM crash

XabiDaChosenOne1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

Yup
@KickSpinFilter
Back then it was an overabundance of consoles this time it's going to be an overabundance of services.

UltraNova1858d ago

The next 5 years or so will make or break this industry. More PC game distribution platforms are competing with Steam (Epic is in it for good), at least 3 different consoles and their iterative releases, 4 Streaming services (PS Now, MS cloud, Stadia, Apple) for now... Add the GaaS craze, that demands even more time and money from the player....

I mean other than rich people who else can afford to keep up, provided they wish to be able to experience a variety of content?

Gaming as it stands today, is a bubble that getting more inflated by the minute...

TheRacingX1858d ago

It has the earmarks of the early 80's crash, as it was everyone trying to cash in on something that started out with quality ideas that were making money to flooding the market with everyones crap shovelware games that were just copies of something that WAS successful until the market collapsed in on itself. Gamers themselves have no one to blame but themselves for this direction the industry is heading in.

Muzikguy1859d ago

It sure is. Reminds me of early PS1 days when we had all those extra systems like 3DO, Jaguar, and others. Only a few and maybe not when that many will succeed. Honestly I'm not liking this direction at all personally

1859d ago
Muzikguy1858d ago

Yes they have but a different kind of player. AppleTV didn't take off like they wanted and people.dont game on that over things like PS or Xbox. That's what I'm saying

Master of Unlocking1858d ago (Edited 1858d ago )

What "others"? You say "all those extra systems" but I can't remember anything else than Panasonic's 3DO and Atari's Jaguar to compete with Sony's PS and Sega's Saturn. Nintendo's N64 only came out in 1998, and by that time both Panasonic and Atari's foray into the industry were regarded as already dead in the water, and Nintendo's infamous Puke-o-Tron known by the name Virtual Boy was considered to be at best a short-lived little gadget like the Tamagochis of yesteryear.

Personally I'm tempted to say "the more the merrier" when it comes to that anyway. We all have to gain from more competitors in the industry. Here's hoping we don't lose one of gaming's last sanctum, the availability of games in tangible forms, in the process, though.

rainslacker1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

This is more like Game Pass than streaming, and it's only available on Apple devices.

But, this is where gaming is at. The market for the consoles is pretty well defined with some entrenched competitors who aren't likely going anywhere, and where one usually dominates, and it's exceedingly hard to break into because console gamers generally don't like the market being disrupted.

But, services are the big thing now, and if these companies can make some money by selling a sub, then they will, because they know most people won't actually use the service that much....although in the case of Game Pass, XBLG, PS+, etc, they're paying for those licenses regardless.

I don't have a problem with services like this. not sure what else could be comparable to offer on Apple devices except maybe an EA access for mobile type thing.

As a side thought, wonder what would happen if Steam and now Epic decided to make a subscription based service along the lines of Game Pass or any of the others. Steam itself has some pretty significant content to pull from, and they're users are generally the kind of people that might actually use a service like this in droves.

crazyCoconuts1859d ago

Yeah this is a lot more grounded and easily achievable than the streaming approach. A good first step.

Like ive said before, these corporations are salivating over games profits and they will ruin the industry by fracturing it and putting up their paywalls and subscriptions.

AizenSosuke1859d ago

Too many moths in one small flame, ouch it's going to linger for awhile

anonymousfan1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

It's an emerging market... Together they'll help market game streaming, proper high speed internet and then when the dust settles 2-3 compagnies will lead the market. Right now everyone just wants their piece of the cake.

AizenSosuke1859d ago

Sadly this is not a good future for us core gamers who think Physical > Digital which I support the previously mentioned but we must not buy this s@%$ for our "plastic" that is core to console gaming.

CrimsonWing691859d ago

It's not streaming though. I think it's more like Game Pass where you have a subscription and download the game. Apple wants the stuff running on the device.

AizenSosuke1859d ago

@Wing

Thank you , because if it was a Stadia-like option, then this will be BS.

optimus1859d ago

@crimson...actually it is a streaming service with the OPTION to download if you choose to....(didn't anybody watch the presentation??) ...As for the studios involved, Apple cited Annapurna Interactive, Bossa Studios, Cartoon Network, Finji, Giant Squid, Klei Entertainment, Konami, LEGO, Mistwalker Corporation, SEGA, Snowman and ustwo as its first development partners.

DaDrunkenJester1859d ago

Small flame? You underestimate the popularity of mobile gaming among the casual market.

AizenSosuke1859d ago (Edited 1859d ago )

I know but this stuff annoys me so, I want an option in the future and my kids will have the option to buy Physical copies or stream copies, and hey make an home with an option to buy your games in what way you want, now forced into some MT, ADs, always-online, 24/7 BS

DaDrunkenJester1859d ago

I think there will always be the option for local hardware, but game distribution will likely go mostly digital and subscriptions like movies and music have become.

AizenSosuke1859d ago

Agree, but option for CD/Blu-ray should in that equation for distribution of games

Muzikguy1859d ago

Maybe with all the moths it will kill the idea lol. I thought Apple would have tried this long ago I'm surprised it took this long. I thought that's what Apple TV was supposed to jumpstart (which it didnt)

"Games will be free of ads and microtransactions"

I'd fucking hope so if I'm paying monthly...

rainslacker1859d ago

Paywall for F2P games. MT will still be plentiful though.

wwinterj1858d ago

I find it amusing they are chagrining people for the removal of things they and/or devs have implemented. It's almost like they get more of your money whatever you do. Unless of course you just don't buy either.

zsquaresoff1859d ago

I mean it's good for developers and the industry that more games are being made and more people are being hired to makes these games. Competition is also good. Don't expect any of these to come close the top 3 tho.

Rude-ro1859d ago

Top two..
😂 still waiting on the third to get into gaming.
This should put a fire under Microsoft a$$.
No third party battle will save them.
All about exclusives that separate themselves and create a need to be a part of.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle13h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic188110h ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio10h ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Lightning775h ago

What he said was facts. How he plays games is no concern of you. Don't get too mad about it.

Cacabunga13h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff218312h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga11h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan7h ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

romulus235h ago

Odd that a company that touts you dont need the hardware to play is already touting another console in the works.

darthv725h ago

They are not reliant on the HW but still want to maintain a presence (no matter how small) is a good thing. It shows commitment to the craft. It reminds me of SNK and how they made games for their own hardware (Neo Geo) while also making them for others because they knew there was a market to do so. They knew they would sell more to others but also sell to their own niche fan base.

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos15h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

DOMination-5h ago

In the last two years they've started exiting the consumer market altogether. All of the newest Surface products are business models only. They can't seem to work out what they want to do with it.

XBManiac14h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple10114h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic12h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.

MrDead5h ago

The only growth MS will get out of the console industry is if it supports it's rivals platforms. Xbox is a pointless machine now. I can see them on a big push for live next, and they won't give up on trying to buy Steam.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 15h ago (Edited 1d 15h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.

exputers1d 12h ago

Agreed. Blizzard recently banned a college Overwatch 2 player who's dependent for saying "shit." Pretty harsh.

Profchaos20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

How rediculas really. You can't say a word that's allowed in most PG films and prime time TV but the game is based around killing the enemy team using guns, explosives etc.

It's just backwards.

just_looken22h ago

What your talking about is called block list

In 2006 a spaceship dropped of the playstation 3/xbox 360 i say that that generation was the last great gen with game functions/tech that has yet to comeback

Anyhow the playstation 3 if you block listed a id they could not talk to you in chatroom with either text or voice. But that was pre mind fucked 2018 when people were more human than sheep.

But hey gta 6 is coming out billion dollar budget without a single player custom character creator and without singeplayer coop off/online something saints row 1-3 had on the xbox 360.

phoenixwing1d 7h ago

Cmon where's the pictures of your children. Don't hold out on them.

H91d 8h ago

At this rate I feel Sony will eventually sell a room to play games in it where they can monitor your every breath

jambola1d 4h ago

I genuinely get a bit worried sometimes when a friend says something that could be offensive In a party
Because I have no trouble believing some bans would happen when in a private party for saying something wrong

SegaSaturn6691d 6h ago

I want them to censor erotic content by measuring my groin temperature so i dont get too distracted while playing black ops 2.

Popsicle1d 6h ago

Terrible idea. Not only do I not consent to providing my biometric data, the potential for mishandling biometric data is almost a certainty. Positive stress and negative stress can produce similar changes in biometrics. Interpreting the precise emotion a person is feeling is not only invasive but could be easily misconstrued. I hope this never comes to fruition.
