"It must be said, however, that some of the activities are a little on the oppressive side if you’re on your lonesome. Clearing control points can be far too overwhelming without backup as the Hyenas tend to simply appear from behind you, and side missions aren’t really that well balanced for solo play. They’re not even that fun to play, either: the cards are stacked very much against you, so it’s just a case of attrition and grinding engagements out. You have to take your time from behind cover, pop up, kill or weaken enemies, and then repeat. It’s not all that entertaining, but “winning” against the odds is admittedly quite fulfilling."

Basically exploration is good while Solo, but when shooting starts you need to grind it out as the game is designed with coop in mind? I don't know... everyone says its excellent and the best looter shooter game to date, but I'm not that into teaming up with strangers these days so I'll leave this game to "mature" a bit more while I play Sekiro (to death) and then try it.

porkChop1866d ago

Yeah, usually these kinds of games aren't too fun in solo play. It makes sense though, they're built specifically for coop. The first game was like that too. Thankfully there's no shortage of singleplayer games.

"Thankfully there's no shortage of singleplayer games"

Indeed!

I like this game. Its possible to play solo, but I don't like it solo. I don't like any game solo (difference between solo and single player). But its extremely fun co op.

Thunder_G0d_Bane1864d ago

Yeah agree, I don't get why people are trying to force singleplayer experiences out of multiplayer games.

Just buy a singleplayer game if thats the experience you want.

I play both, I enjoy a Witcher 3 just as much as i enjoy Destiny. I don't need the two to be combined.

DaDrunkenJester1865d ago

I'm level 5 right now and have been playing solo. It's fine as long as you don't wander into areas higher than your level. It's easier to do that when you have a team, but when solo, stick to the missions and side missions that are you level or MAYBE only 1 above you.

It's all manageable though if you play slow and smart. Make sure you have a good Mid to long range rifle and short range shotty or SMG. Pick skill upgrades that benefit solo play. There are great skills that heal your team, but those are not as useful going solo. Pick ones that do more offence or distract. And if you need to you can always either call for help from a random real person, or in certain situations you can call for help from local friendly NPC's.

glennhkboy1865d ago

I'm lv7, tried to do a lv4 story mission solo, got overwhelm so many times that I just can't continue to play. I got the loadout as you've suggest, but just can't survive the rush from all directions. Also, no one answer my Call-To-Help.

CorndogBurglar1865d ago

@glennhkboy

Dude.....you're playing 3 levels above your own level. Yeah, don't be surprised you got overwhelmed. DaDrunkenJester even said as much.

Go play some side missions or take some Control Points. Control Points let you call NPC's to come help you and they always have good loot when you capture them. Level up, then go play that story mission.

Play smart. Not stupid. There are plenty of things to do to level up before taking on story missions that are 3 levels higher than you lol

DaDrunkenJester1864d ago

@Glenn

If you're getting bum rushed from all sides, that means you're rushing too far into the battle zone. Double back and let them come to you from one direction. Also, are you using the turret or drone in these fights? They help a lot with doing some damage and distracting enemies.

There is no way you should be having this much trouble on a level that is three levels below you. Are you equipping or crafting new armor? I'm at level 7 now myself and I have all blue armor and gear. Most was from crafting it.

Silly Mammo1860d ago (Edited 1860d ago )

I'm a lvl 14 and done almost all of the side missions, control points etc solo. It helps to have a turret and/or a drone. I do link up with randoms for main missions though.

I'm almost halfway through the game & I've been playing mostly solo & having a blast though I've played co op twice & it was fun also.

maybelovehate1865d ago

I don’t agree about the control points being too hard. They are challenging solo, but not unfair. There are no secret spawn locations, you know every angle they can come from. And the radar works well.

Jeff2571865d ago

In fact the more people you have on your team the more enemies you have to fight for Control Points. Honestly before they patched it I had taken a Control Point with two friends and we had rocket launcher enemies and just swarms of other enemies firing at us. It felt like an epic drawn out battle. When I went back into solo it hadn't saved it. I did it again solo and it went much quicker and the enemy variety wasn't as great.

Even standard missions will throw a lot more at you when you're grouped up as opposed to running solo.

CorndogBurglar1865d ago

Let's not forget that you can call NPC's to come help you when doing Control Points.

It's like people complaining have no idea how the game works...

rdgneoz31865d ago

The missions are designed for a non Call of Duty mind set - don't stand in the open and try to kill things. If you run in or just stand in one place, enemies will use tactics to kill you or just mow you down in the open. You can easily solo the side missions (I've done about 75% of my side missions solo), events like hostage rescue or control points (with control points you can call in NPCs to help you), and such easily by yourself. Only thing that is tough would be the supply drops that spawn tons of mobs coming at all sides while you try to loot 3 chests and the hunters. Regular main missions you can solo or duo with a bit of work.

Jeff2571865d ago

I managed to solo a supply drop a couple of days ago and got all three chests. Granted I was level 18 but it can be done. The enemies only come in waves and can be cleared out. Just have to be able to focus on any that try to take a box. One group didn't even show up until after I had grabbed the first box. I grabbed the other two with no resistance after another fight.

Dirtnapstor1865d ago

I’ve been playing solo so far. Yes, it can be a grindfest clearing areas, but it’s extremely satisfying when you do. I’ve been whipped multiple times, but you will learn the patterns. And keep moving. Don’t tread into areas that are occupied with enemies of higher caliber until you level up.
D2 has been phenomenal thus far. Massive nailed it this time around.

Kostche1865d ago

i completed all control points solo, only issue i run into was i done side mission in downtown east and forgot get the shd cache and now cannot get it due to its location in side mission

i cleared everything up to the last stronghold mission solo, game is great, the game is best looter shooter out there, and is 100% great improvement on d1, and the amount peoples games i joined have been great, not much mic talking but still having lot fun

DaveZero1865d ago (Edited 1865d ago )

I don't agree as control points you send a flair up and look for the gun icon and incoming troops will aid you to take the control point. At most if you die on the control point after you've sent the flare up then you go back and usually they have arrived and fighting the enemy for you, it doesn't reset on death.

Singleplayer or co op the game is amazing. Those of you who are doing side missions early on need to stop, side missions scale with your level so youd best save them for level 20s. Just do main missions before 20 for that one time exp reward..There are also the question mark side quests which are repeatable but not as much exp reward like the hexagon shaped side quests.

Wait till your strongholds are done, black tusk invade and you start fighting hunters to collect masks, 8 player raids and so on, so much to come and a difficulty spike for you, if you think it's tough now wait till the world tiers.

Press start, go to social and just press X on Xbox and change to open, random join and usually most of the time, random follow and behave..

Ubisoft have easy the game of the year, so much content, and quality in the content..

CorndogBurglar1865d ago

The writer mentions clearing control points? That's funny because when you get to a Control Ppint you can send off your signal flair a 4-5 NPC's will come to your aid and help you fight off the enemies.

Are there moments when the game can feel overwhelming playing solo? Sure. But that isn't one of them

You can play it just fine on SP to be honest. The side missions are much more varied this time around and offer a good challenge. Enemies scale based on your level and whether you are solo or in a group. You can call in backup when clearing control points too and using cover is very important or you will die quite quickly, it is a cover-based shooter after all. It's all about using your skills correctly and watching the enemies, they will flank and rush if you stay in one spot.

I've really quite enjoyed playing solo more than I did in Division 1. I usually find a group for the main story missions but they can be solo'd too. I get it's not for everyone but the game is definitely playable solo.

Exploring is fun and there is always something to find or random encounters around the map.

Livingthedream1865d ago

Enjoying the game so far. Kudos to ubi for trying new things, everyone is doing the same ish, but they're really trying to bring something fresh

stiggs1865d ago (Edited 1865d ago )

Do you think that the first Division game is worth playing in SP? I'm not much into co-op and I was thinking of giving it a whirl.

Fizzle0021865d ago

You can play it solo up to level 30 but the missions will get tougher, especially on higher difficulties. Challenging difficulty is solo-able but Legendary is incredibly difficult unless you are geared properly and know what you are doing. You won't be able to solo the incursions as they are designed for co-op play. Some people have solo'd certain incursions but again, you'd need to be geared properly and know what you are doing.

Christopher1865d ago

I don't know about now, but at release all but the few most challenging 'end game' missions could be done solo with the right gear/patience. But, some of that gear did require some group play to obtain, but if you didn't feel like grouping, there was a good amount to do solo. Even DZ was soloable if you didn't mind instances of gank groups or wall hackers.

stiggs1865d ago

Cool. Thanks for the tips.

TheColbertinator1865d ago

Been playing it solo so far and it's been fantastic. If you are solo, get perks like Turret and Drone to provide you that extra distraction you need at the right moment.

Relientk771865d ago

I'm playing it solo, like I did with most of Division 1 and I'm having a blast. I swear exploring the map is addicting because you always find new guns, gear, and materials, not to mention activities and bad guys to kill.

PMind1865d ago

Totally. I hit level 10 last night and have only teamed up with someone once who was calling for help on a mission that I just finished moments earlier solo. It can get overwhelming if you're not prepared but it makes it so much more satisfying when you come out in the end. The enemy AI is pretty good in that it is varied and you need to be smart. You'll have enemies coming at you from all angles. Running and gunning is not an option. Using cover and skills is absolutely necessary.

Traecy1865d ago

Absolutely!! I find the game so fun & addicting & playing by yourself I find fun but some situations can be hectic & sometimes a little co op help can be fun as well.
