Sony Announces 3D Bombshell at E3 2011

Before Sony’s Jack Tretton took the stage today at E3, we got to see a game montage that highlighted many of the games to be released this year. When the audience was cued to put their glasses on, it was clear 3D was going to be featured by Sony at E3 this year. Resistance 3, Uncharted 3 Drake’s Deception, and many other titles are coming out in 3D. Jack also announced that other titles like the God of War Origins collection will be re-released later this year in 3D. Overall, Sony plans on having over 100 3D titles available in the next year. Sony wants to show they are serious about the 3D experience.

This tv is quite amazing...

pojut4704d ago (Edited 4704d ago )

Sony’s Playstation-branded display seems…odd. The idea behind it is really cool, allowing each player to see a completely different image on the same 24″ screen, depending on where they sit. This allows in-room co-op, without having to resort to split-screen.

I can’t help but wonder though…$499 nowadays is enough to buy you a decently-sized TV, one that would provide almost as much (if not more) gaming area per person in split-screen as that little 24″ model Sony is touting.

I think spending that much money on a 24″ display is kind of a waste of money. But that’s just me.

If it were a higher resolution display (more so a computer monitor) it would probably be worth it. However, at 500 dollars you really wont get much of an amazing tv outside of possibly a 32" one especially since that price point is pretty much the entry point for decently sized HDTV's. So you would still likely get less area per person. Although it still is likely better to go for a regular tv given this is a first generation product. How it matures will be interesting. And of course it really depends if you play multiplayer locally. If you don't then unless you simply need 3d, it isn't that ideal.

What I would like to see is this technology incorporated into their Bravia line since they are releasing this, or industry-wide. I don't care much for 3d, and I don't really want to use glasses, but the implementation of this seems pretty good.

You make a decent point but you're forgetting that this one comes with Resistence 3, HDMI cable and 3D glasses as well. I know many TVs don't even come with the HDMI cable so it's really not as bad as you make it sound. I'll admit though I would also get a bigger non-3D HDTV instead.

edit: @ snoop, I think your point about whether you play local multiplayer is a good one since there really haven't been many games this gen that have any sort of split screen play which makes getting this TV less of a good idea. Then again I think that with this TV being released Sony will be producing more games that have local multiplayer now which should make the TV a bit more appealing.

All I know is that I might get one to play Uncharted 3 since there's a lot of buzz saying how good that game is going to be in 3D..plus it comes with Resistance 3, a game that I'm also planning to get so it's a win win situation :)

did you forget that its not the tv thats 499 its the hole bundle set.

Considering you get a $70 pair of 3D glasses, a $60 game, and a HDMI 1.4 capable cable ($10-20 at least), it's a pretty damn good deal. The 2 player split screen thing makes that good deal even sweeter.

the article forgot to mention it runs 1080p

RememberThe3574704d ago

I'm seriously thinking about this bundle for when it drops. But since I don't really know shit about tvs I was wondering if it really is a good deal?

I'd also like to know if it runs at 120hrz?

Can anyone drop some knowledge on me and help me out?

tawak4703d ago

from what i read it runs at 240hz and 120 each when on split screen

RememberThe3574703d ago

Thanks. I'll have to wait to see the pricing of other tvs. But at this point it's either this or a larger regular HDTV.

Said this before in another article: Microsoft demoed this tech through kinect a while back.

krauley4704d ago

enjoy looking at your tea kettle while your buddy looks at a skull head! But thats not anything like what this tv is doing.

FordGTGuy4704d ago

Actually it's exactly what this TV is doing....

Jamaicangmr4703d ago (Edited 4703d ago )

If we are gonna nit pic then Range Rover implemented this in their new Range Rover Discovery.

The point is though Sony is making it available for gamers at an affordable price.

Simple as that.
