You've been charging your smartphone wrong

Yes, we know. Our smartphone batteries are bad because they barely last a day.
But it's partially our fault because we've been charging them wrong this whole time.

Great article. Makes you wonder how can so many people be so dumb till now.

Speed-Racer3086d ago

Why are people dumb for not knowing this?

Devil-X3086d ago

Dumb in the sense that it should be common sense that excess of everything is bad. The same goes with your smartphone's battery life, of course it's not a good idea to keep it plugged in for hours even after it's fully charged.

Speed-Racer3086d ago

A lot of people are under the assumption that once it hits 100%, the charge stops.

Wh15ky3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

LOL! What do you mean 'till now'?

I don't see why its 'dumb' that most people assume that their 'smart' phones should be programmed to stop charging when they reach 100% and are still plugged in.

This sounds to me, more like a 'dumb' design fault as the most convenient time to charge a phone is over night.

Devil-X3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

It seems I may have the jumped the gun too soon as all those disagrees on what I stated above only proves that people were not dumb only "till now".

I guess they still are.

EDIT - ( Don't know why my comment has been marked as inappropriate when there's a healthy discussion going on here ? )

Wh15ky3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

I don't think there's any getting away from the fact that this a design fault.
As I said previously the most convenient time for most people to charge their phone is whilst they are sleeping (when they don't need it).
If leaving a phone charging overnight is significantly detrimental to the batteries lifespan, then this needs to be addressed by the manufacturers, or perhaps it's an idea for an app, if there isn't one already.

When do you find it most convenient to charge your phone?

Speed-Racer3086d ago

Devil X Spends his whole day looking at this phone charge. /s

Devil-X3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

I carry a power bank around with me which I charge overnight because it takes time to charge and is not fully charged even after I wake up.

EDIT - and what do you mean by it's a design fault ? So basically what you are saying is that thousands of handsets from hundreds of manufacturers are at same fault and so far not a single manufacturer has found a way to rectify this ?

Soldierone3085d ago

I agree with you. I don't know why they don't function like other devices and simply just run off the power when plugged in. For example your laptop, you can charge it 100 percent, then remove the battery, and if the plug is still there then it will keep running fine.

Phone makers by this point should create an "off switch" where if the phone is at 100 percent and plugged in, the phone stops utilizing the battery power.

Also, Devil, what phone doesn't 100 percent charge over a 6 hour period? My S6 only takes an hour to charge from under 10 percent to 100.....

Wh15ky3085d ago

LOL! You carry a power bank around with you... That's a good one! Very convenient solution!

My guess is they don't want to do anything about it because they want us to have incentives to keep upgrading our phones every 1-2 years, and a degraded battery is a common one. As long as consumers are complacent with this practice, they'll keep getting away with it.

What are you guys talking about? Your phone absolutely stops charging when its full. If it didn't your battery would be destroyed and dangerous. The power management is handled internally. Its not good to leave it plugged in because you are drawing power while its hooked up but it isn't "charging". The charge level just stays the same. Do you actually believe your phone would let your battery get over charged endlessly?

Wh15ky3085d ago (Edited 3085d ago )

According to the article:

"Once your smartphone has reached 100% charge, it gets "trickle charges" to keep it at 100% while plugged in. It keeps the battery in a high-stress, high-tension state, which wears down the chemistry within."

Pretty dumb for a 'smart' phone!

ravinash3086d ago (Edited 3086d ago )

With smart phones these days, can't they create a system that manages the charging to the battery while it's plugged in.
So if you plug your phone is to charge over night while you sleep, the phone will know to stop charging.

I know most of this stuff, but I'm not keeping an eye on how much battery I have through out the day.... I have better things to think about.

Devil-X3086d ago

May be you have some "bigger" pockets as well to compensate for your ignorance towards your smartphone's battery life.

Calling people ignorant and dumb is a healthy discussion? Lol.

Devil-X3085d ago

God! If I had a dollar for every dislike till now how rich I would be ( -_- ) .......

Speed-Racer3085d ago

Guess you're a millionaire now lol

Soldierone3085d ago

I only have a problem with two of their suggestions being highly contradicting. If trickle charging is bad for your phone, then how is randomly plugging it in whenever you can a good thing? It's basically the same thing, it's constantly being charged.

Some good tips, lithium batteries are a bit picky. The main reason peoples smartphone batteries are so short lived is mainly because the vast majority of us let the battery come real close to 0% way too often. Lithium's don't like to be completely, or mostly, drained. Doing it once or twice you won't notice much degradation, but some people nearly drain their batteries on a daily basis. And eventually it gets to a point where the battery depletes in a record time.

Its even worse when a lithium battery is left with a low charge for long periods of time. The recommended storage is about at 70% (or roughly 3.7 volts). Letting a lithium battery sit below that range will further damage it. Also ideally you should charge the battery once it hits 70%.
