The problem is with how trademarks work in the US, it's not really the fault of the company so much as the wording of the law. Google, Apple, and other companies tend to love fan sites, as they help promote information about the company's products. But at the same time, a company is required by law to defend and protect their trademarks, otherwise they can be deemed invalid.
