I've never been a big fan of handheld gaming, so I can't see the full picture as well as others. Still, aren't you jumping the gun a little by saying the dedicated-handheld market is dead or dying? Phone gaming, with or without a controller, is its own thing, complete with bucketloads of crap games given away for free in order to rake in microtransaction money. What are the odds of seeing games like Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey on phones? There are plenty of traditional good games on 3DS as well--the kinds of games you're unlikely to ever see on phones. There's nothing hybrid about the Switch if it's always used as a portable either, so I see no reason why it can't take over where the 3DS leaves off, other than the janky lenticular 3D. Were portable 3D and VR going anywhere to begin with? (VR as a whole still isn't substantial, anywhere.)

Finally, what does PSVR--a console VR system--have to do with Samsung Galaxy or any phone? Apples and oranges, my friend.
