Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as "remarkable".

Although fasting diets have been criticised by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection.

Good news for anyone who'll be fasting during Ramadhan. Though it'll be very difficult this year not eating for about 18 hours a day.

Muslims fast for a month during the Islamic month of Ramadhan.

So it's bascially not eating or drinking during the time that the sun is up each day for a whole month.

Fairly easy to do during winter when the days are really short. In the summer it's a different story.
