Netflix Uses Pirate Sites to Determine What Shows to Buy

TorrentFreak- This week Netflix rolled out its video streaming service in the Netherlands where it hopes to build a massive user base in the years to come. One of the keys to achieve this goal is getting the rights to the most popular movies and TV-shows, and this is where pirate sites come in. Netflix Vice President of Content Acquisition Kelly Merryman says that popularity on file-sharing platforms determines in part what TV-series the company buys.

Piracy is truly the noblest of activities.

Then where is the Simpsons, Big Bang theory. Game of thrones? 100 knock off movies add quality instead of quantity. I'm sure jack the giant stalker, any other "not to be confused with" titles, the numerous disney ripoffs have people satisfied right. They lost South Park and everything from show time. Keep trying Netflix.

you wont see game of thrones on there or the Wire till HBO lets them put it on there, just for the wire, HBO wants a cool 200 million or more

Just because they use that data to determine what to buy, doesn't mean they can afford or justify the cost of said item.

Take PS All-Stars Battle Royale for instance. The two most wanted characters before the title was even announced? Crash and Spyro. The two most often talked about, rumored and wanted characters before it released? Crash and Spyro. The most requested / demanded DLC characters till the DLC ended? Crash and Spyro. I think Sony was well aware how much it was wanted, but if Activision or any company wants an absurd sum for them, why bother?

Disney Rip Offs? You know Disney just used old Folk Tales and don't actually OWN most of their stories, right?

Also Game of Thrones can't get on Netflix because HBO has HBO Go so they're not gonna let it.

I agree with quality over quantity. It's annoying hearing Netflix say "we have added thousands of titles" you go on there and 500 of them are dumb documentaries that are not even worth watching.

I rather them spend a few bucks to get something I actually want, over adding a bunch of crap i couldn't care less about. Dont get me wrong I've found a few shows or movies I wouldn't have otherwise watched, but Ive also attempted to find something new only to watch 5 movies that totally sucked.

Nothing is wrong here. This way they can tell what shoes are the most popular without costing them anything since this information is open to everyone.

Netflix has spoiled me. Instead of waiting week by week ,then every two weeks and so on for a show. I just wait for my favorite ABC & CW the show up the following year... and binge.

fatstarr3875d ago (Edited 3875d ago )

netflix could eradicate movie and tv piracy if they had shows up to the current season, and 1 hour delayed simulcasts. because if you binge a series on netflix and you catch up the only logical thing is to go to the pirate sites. give me a 1$ access to view the latest movie in the comfort of my house.

if they just gave people what they want all that traffic would be eliminated by at least 60%. i would pay an extra 2$ a month for that.

legal hoops and greed make simple things so out of this world sometimes.
