Apple Said to Buy HopStop, Pushing Deeper Into Maps

Bloomberg: Apple agreed to buy online transit-navigation service HopStop.com Inc., people with knowledge of the deal said, seeking to improve mapping tools after a rocky debut for its directions software last year.
The people asked not to be identified because the deal isn’t public. AllThingsD reported earlier today that Cupertino, California-based Apple is purchasing Locationary Inc., a Toronto-based company focused on business-location maps.

Google was rolling out certain features sooner on its Android app than the iOS app.

Going forward, I think that Apple will keep working on its mapping app, even if it's only 80% or 90% as good as Google Maps and even if most people use Google Maps instead. It's a good insurance policy for Apple.

Apple's maps will never be as good as Google maps. They can only try to catch up, and that's how it is going to be constantly.
