PS Vita 2 or new PlayStation handheld doomed as Vita slips off to die

If you're hoping for a PS Vita 2 or new PlayStation handheld there's some bad news. As support for Sony's Vita dwindles, so does hope for a successor.

fenome2467d ago

I never owned a Vita (same reasons I'll probably never own a Switch), I'm just not into handhelds. Don't get me wrong, I played my Gameboy and Pokemon all the time when I was like 13, but times changed..

That being said though, I've heard about Vita dying for like 3 years at least. How is that possible when I also see at least one or two games coming out for it all the time. It's weird to me.

mcstorm2466d ago

I see where your coming from about the swatch I am not a massive hand held gamers owned a psv and 3ds but did not use them much but the switch has impressed me. So far having Zelda, MK8D and Splatoon 2 are 3 games not to be missed and it has come in handy when I have been on the train to London a few times.

Each to there own though.

mcstorm2466d ago

Haha thanks all I was half asleep when sending that message need to remember to reread my posts especially when sending a message from my phone.

What's funny is that on my frequented Vita fan forum (The Vita Lounge) phrases like "Vita is dead" and "No Gamez" are used ironically, since most of us have a massive backlog of games and numerous upcoming releases we're excited for. XD

It may not be getting big name heavy hitters but it still gets tons of support from Japanese devs and many indie releases. Heck, I have 9 upcoming physical games (not counting obscure digital indies) for this year on my "to buy" list, including one full exclusive. (Mary Skelter Nightmares) If the system is dead then I don't know how that's possible. :)

DeadManMMX2466d ago

Ditto. I have years of content on my Vita. I hope at minimal support continues in perpetuity.

morganfell2466d ago

Wasn't this article written three years ago? Or four even? We have been hearing about the death of the Vita for so long it is ridiculous. Yes games and support have dropped. But they have been calling it dead for years and as is often the case, game writers are wrong and wrong accompanied by the inability to see how they have been wrong for some time.

I guess if you keep saying it is raining long enough eventually you will be right. But no one should mistake such predictions for insight.

Eidolon2466d ago

I have filled a 64gb worth of pretty much 90% free games, I'm never going to be able to beat them all, Although, the multi-platform games have been starting to show the Vita's age since PS4 Release. Would love to see a Vita 2, even as just an extension to the PS4/5 and just multi-platform /ports.. A handheld with equivalent battery life now would easily have better graphics than the PS3.

segamaniaco2466d ago

White day, labyrinth named school

I want that

DJStotty2466d ago

similar to "xbox is dead" and "no games"

?

or just for Vita 2 lol

Why would they not make a PS5 a console to make a portable that outs to the tv, when they could just make that PS Vita 2?

Nintendo needed to drop console and go portable only.

Sony doesn't.

Omnislashver362465d ago (Edited 2465d ago )

W... T... F...

This makes no sense, PS1, 2, 3, and 4 were all massively popular and cutting edge home consoles, now you think they're going to go the gimmick route and cut their next console's power by 75% to be portable?

Clearly in denial, PS5 will be a beastly home console, not a gimmick portable with 25% graphics.

OB1Biker2466d ago

Best comment I've seen for a while about the Vita. We ve been getting 'bad news' from the media for years and yet the Vita lives on for people who want to play on a handheld.
I personally don't play often on it, my kid plays more often equally on Vita and 3DS, but it's nice to have when not at home when your not into nintendo. At least it s an option and so many people praise 'options' that it's weird the Vita got so much hate.

JackBNimble2466d ago

Yes it gets hate as well as free games every month on ps plus ... my kid would be very confused if I told him the vita is dead.

It's aminly down tothe fact that Sony themselves no longer support it with new games. it's basically been kept alive by Japanese third parties like Atlus and indies.

It's on life support. I can't see Sony making another one as neither The PSP or the Vita have been terribly successful outside of Japan. With the Switch looking to replace the 3DS as well as the WiiU. I wouldn't eant to be the company going up against what is essentially a Nintendo handheld with the full weight of nintendos studios behind it.

Servbot412466d ago

I absolutely hate handhelds but Monster Hunter forces me to get one over and over. Thank god for World.

ChickeyCantor2466d ago

> when I was like 13

The implication, lol

fenome2466d ago (Edited 2466d ago )

I wasn't implying anything, I'm just old. Lol

Godmars2902466d ago

Thing is Switch is the best of both worlds: a handheld that can be put on a large TV. Despite loss or restrictions in power.

Twice Sony touched upon the concept, with adaption cables for the PSP, the PSTV which was a PSV's guts, but failed to take it to completion. Likely again because of power limitations.

Still hilarious how Vita managed to outlive Wii U

Araragifeels 2466d ago

VITA = Life so obviously it will keeping living.

Servbot412466d ago

Wii U managed to outsell it 2:1 though.

georgenancy2466d ago

nah you got it wrong,it outsold the wii u

FallenAngel19842466d ago

According to VGC, Vita continues to outsell Wii U 2:1

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2466d ago

@FallenAngel1984
But it only 1 million above.

Silly gameAr2466d ago

Well, these guys can't really deny that no matter how much they want to.

Xx_Pistol_xX2466d ago

Whats sad it that the Vita has features that the Switch doesn't like
-Thropihes are achievements
-Party
-Party Chat
-Hulu
-Netflix
-Internet browser
I can go on.

I really wish there would be another Playstation handheld. The PS Vita was better than the PSP and I have to imagine the next system would have been perfect.

All the next system needed was L2, R2, L3 and R3 for better controls, then it would have been perfect. The touchscreen and touchpad just isn't the same, so bringing those controls to the next system it would need.

I also would have liked a built in hard drive with at minimum 16 gigs and it use normal memory cards, because if it does it would sell like crazy, unlike the PS Vita, which sold memory cards for an insane amount.

I just wish Sony would make a new system, because I'd gladly buy it and if they ever do I hope it allows for multiple users on the system, this way I can get trophies on it, plus my kids can too.

madforaday2466d ago

They get twin joystick for the Vita but they rarely used them in any manner. Of course, they weren't the best joysticks ever either. They try to sell COD with Vita which the people who bought the Vita, I am almost positive don't care about the Vita. They care about COD on PC or console. Killzone was the best when it came to shooters on the Vita for me when it comes to PvP. I really wish Zipper made their Vita game PvP instead of just SP missions trying to get a high score. When it came to the Vita, when I bought a game and played it I just thought I wonder how much bigger would this game be if it was on the PS4. You are also right on the L2, R2, R3, and L3. Controllers need more buttons that is just fact.

crazyCoconuts2466d ago

And how great is the online integration: friends, chat, messages, trophies, comments, etc. These are things the Switch will never get. It's really a great system with a healthy catalog of games.

ragnalamb2466d ago

Yeah, Vita was always meant to be a social handheld, it had near! Where you got random things for games you owned just by playing the same game as some people nearby. Guess thats the reason all the things you mentioned were great

wheresmymonkey2466d ago (Edited 2466d ago )

Sounds like you should by a Switch mate. It has everything you wanted from the next Vita including the multiple users on one device.

Lockdown5552466d ago

Lol, how does this have so many down votes? Lots of angry Sony Fanboys mad that Nintendo made what they claim to want. Pretty hilarious.

UKmilitia2466d ago

the memory czard shit put me off from day one,i refuse to pay that much for a card when the same storage is avavle for a 7th of the price

yeahokwhatever2466d ago

the memory card thing ensured that i never bought many games for the device. im convinced its why it didnt do better.

Silly gameAr2466d ago

No one could pirate games as easily as the PSP is probably the real reason it didn't do better.

Vegamyster2466d ago

I agree in terms of hardware but games wise the PSP was a lot better, it had exclusive GTA's, MGS, Socom, Final Fantasy, God Of War, Castlevania, Monster Hunter plus a bunch of other smaller ones, Vita is doing well in the JRPG department though.

bumbleforce2466d ago

I was considering buying a handheld because I work so much. The vita has way more pros. Remote play better battery but best of all a vastly supine game line up. Go look at it they have a lot of awesome classic games and vita games. If always been hoping for an xbox handh3ld or just a portable 360 but that's not gonna happen so vita wins the day. I'm not a big fan of Nintendo's game and that's my preference but the main reason I won't buy a switch is just because of Nintendo's anti consumer policies.

I would kill to have a Way of the Samurai game with a huge budget and modern tech... The first game was one of my greatest joys on PS2 back in the day. And I really hope From Software will do something with Tenchu... I hate that they're just sitting on the IP like it doesn't even exist.

Relientk7714d ago

Don't play with my feelings like that.

Also, new Tenchu please!

TheColbertinator13d ago

Tenchu would be superb in this day and age. Ninja and samurai games are hot right now and more is better.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5217d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5216d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212116d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

MrNinosan16d ago

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5216d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5216d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos17d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani16d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum17d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman17d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim16d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

I disagree Batman
