Dual layer blu ray displays top out at 50gb, but could in theory cram more data through compression.
If you start compressing to much you'll start seeing diminishing returns.
Uhd disc triple layer can go up to 100gb triple layer, but the increased cost of the disc would be passed on to developers.
Hard drives are faster than the currently employed UHD drive in the XB1S /X,so it makes sense for them to use the HDD.

If so I don't know about the Pro, but you guys should use the cloud. MS have a a robust cloud structure. Only keep a few games on my 1TB at time. Only the games I'm currently playing.

Who are these gamers? Gamers that will buy the One X ate gamers that WANT 4K games haha. X is compatible with external HDDs and prices are always great on Amazon. PC gamers already know of 4k assets and invest in HDDs, this isn't anything out of the norm. X is for gamers who understand what its capabilities are.

The article says "who has limited data caps these days".. here's an answer. Literally everyone who has Comcast which is a considerably large portion of the broadband customer market (Comcast and Time Warner own most of the cable internet business). Comcast implemented a 1TB data cap last fall/winter, and charges for blocks of usage after that. When Centurylink was trying to sell me on their slower but more affordable internet, I found their monthly data allowance was 600GB. They may not overtly tell you there's a cap, but trust that most ISP's have one and the rest will probably have one soon. Enjoy!

Honestly this should have been expected. Xbox One games were already pushing past 50GB with day 1 patches before Xbox One X and they're not going to ship the disc with the code and assets that will only work on a small portion of the Xbox One base.

Yes and a few vocal gamers complained when we moved from SD to HD claiming SD was fine and there was no need for HD because most TV's were still SD. I recall the sky was falling when MS required a broadband connection for Xbox Live. Point is...when you have technology advances or increases often times the "old way" of doing things even if not broken just wont work and so new methods and ways of doing things have to be instituted.

no shit. thats why discs suck (in addition to being slow and delicate) and obviously if you want higher fidelity its gonna take more space. theres a reason switch games are like 5gb and ps4/xb1 games are like 45gb and obviously the one x being able to support 4k textures is gonna take even more space.

This is another scenario of if this hurdle is too much for you to jump, The One X isnt meant for you. Same with the price, or the games, or any other reason. Just stick with the One S or not an Xbox at all, pretty simple.

On a sane timeline we'd all have gigabit internet connections shortly and this wouldn't be so bad. Sadly, ISP infrastructure in this country just isn't advancing like it should be. Score one for physical media's continued life.

Currently have a 1tb external with about 200- 250gb overall storage left 1x comes with additional 500gb (1tbinternal) than i already have(500gb internal) so hopefully 750gb last me the gen

I don't think 4k textures really take up that much more space. Who cares about a few more gb when almost all games are 50 plus now days. The way gaming is today everyone needs external memory and if you can't afford a 500$ console and an external hard drive sorry.

I ran out of space on my 2tb external for my Xbox One. You know what I did? I went out and got a larger 6tb external, transferred my games, and kept on playing. I didn't blame Microsoft for anything.

When Sony added external HDD support to the PS4, I went out and bought an external drive immediately.

In the HD era, space will always be an issue, especially with the mandatory installs from disk. 4k textures do not bring on a new problem, it just increases the rate at which it will be a problem for some people.

It's worse than I thought. I figured data installation from disc or download would be a bear at 4 times the pixels to fill. But I guess the nasty reveal here is that there is no complete disc installation of 4K games? So the XOX, working at 4K, absolutely *has* to go online to download 4K graphics. Games won't be fully available on disc anymore? No way to install this console's 4K games without playing nice with a Microsoft online service? Whoa!

This is why i say ms shoukdve made 2-3! Scorpio skus. 1 $449 500gb(maybe) 1 $500 1tb (current) 1 $600 2tb (skin & elite controller too)

I remember back in the day when BF3 had an HD texture pack. I don't see the issue. You download it if you want to and don't if you care not to.

This is why UHD/4K Blu-ray will be a must for the PS5. A dual-layer UHD BD is 66GB, triple-layer 100GB. If they stick with standard BD that's only 25GB/50GB, which clearly won't cut it. I want the 4K content on disc, not in a massive patch!

Glad I purchased that 5TB external a couple years ago. It's not quite half full yet so in the event that I eventually upgrade, I should be okay.

The Pro enhancements are also downloaded, so I don't see why this is a big deal. I fully expected the X enhancements to come as a downloaded patch.

LOL....like people have a choice? I wish I could pay more for a higher cap, but I can't. Has nothing to do with being a gamer. It is just an obstacle that a lot of folks like me have to deal with.

I have 8TB of storage so that should be enough when I get the X. External drives are already a must for most of us with many X1 and X360 BC games which mine are 193 total games so far

The last console I owned was the Xbox 360. I honestly believed in the solid 4k 60fps hype for XONEX. I was going to pass over the PS4 (stupidly) this generation.

if i lived in the states i probably would have bought everything. i paid $550 for my42" LED tv about two years ago and im sure the exact tv cost half that in the USA. my ps4 i bought about three months after launch paid $700 electronics are super expensive here in bahamas

The price is not so much the issue but I think tech. We are advancing content size but we are still using old infrastructure and tech which is not keeping up.

This will probably force people to buy the games on disk in order to save space... Yes, I know the game has to be installed anyway but installing from a disk is a lot faster than installing from a download. Which if you have a data cap on your internet service than that could be a regular problem for you...you could probably fill a 2 TB drive with just 10 4k games and all their updates....

This comment won't be popular, but I really think people should just skip a generation of Xbox, save that money, then by the time the next generation of Xbox comes out, just buy a gaming PC, or build one. Then get a PS4. I know not everyone has that kind of money, but it's what I did, and I honestly can't be a happier gamer than I am right now. Just reading all this mess about XBoneX and this 4k stuff, my PC has been able to do 4k for the past two years. And I don't have to worry about storage space at all. People dealing with this nonsense, but there's people like me who are trying to tell everyone you don't have to deal with a XboneX if you really don't want to. You do have other options. And this isn't about PC master race, blah blah blah. I just think building my PC was the best financial move I could've ever made.
