Gamers Are Already Getting Their Panties in a Twist About Xbox One X 4K Texture Downloads

Rich at GameSpew: If you want breathtaking 4K experiences you need better assets, and better assets take up more space. They're not going to fit on a disc, in most cases.

Something tells me that 1tb disc in the xb1x will be a major hurdle for devs looking to make 4K assets available on the console down the road...

Neonridr2504d ago

external drives are going to become a must.

UltraNova2504d ago Show
DJStotty2504d ago

externals are already a must. with every console.

Neonridr2504d ago

@UltraNova - yeah, I swapped out for a 2TB hd in my Pro. But I have a bunch of external drives kicking around, so I'm not worried if I have to end up using one down the road.

Vasto2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

More storage adds more cost. 1TB is enough for a console to come with.

If you want more then buy more.

343_Guilty_Spark2504d ago

@UltraNova so you can complain more about it being $600 or $700. Go take a nap...

External drives are cheap.

Death2504d ago

I just bought a 4TB external drive for one of my other Xbox One's. I didn't find out until after I installed it that you can download all of your games to a single drive and then move it from console to console and still have access to all your games. Kind of a cool feature.

4Sh0w2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

I don't know any serious Xbox owner who doesn't have an external already, "plug n play for the win"....lol, Im sure about 99% those buying an X1X already have large external drives, shiii you can have 2 external drives at the same time= 16TB.

Did people expect 4K games to be smaller or the same size, lol come on folks what's next, you're gonna complain X doesn't make you breakfast?... jeesh.

frostypants2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

@Vasto, incremental storage increases are cheap. The cost difference between a 2TB drive and 1TB is something like $20. Console manufacturers should at least give us the option. As it is we have to buy the crappy little drive that we're just gonna replace anyway. So instead of spending $20 more we end up having to spend $90 more.

Death2504d ago

$89 for the 2TB drive and $129 for the 4TB. To be honest I don't use the 1TB internal since I found out the external can be moved from console to console. With a combination of Xbox 360 and Xbox One games I have just over 200 now and take up roughly 2TB's of storage. I'm not sure what impact 4K will have on the way I store games. My guess is I will get a separate external HDD for the console I use for 4K gaming. No reason to download 4K games on my 1080p set.

UnHoly_One2504d ago

External drives are already a requirement for anyone that has a decent amount of games and doesn't delete stuff constantly.

I have almost 4TB of games installed on mine right now.

I can't tell you how happy I am that when I get my One X I won't have to copy or redownload any of those games, I'll just plug the 2 HDDs into the new console and I'm done. :)

darthv722504d ago

Did Pro owners get their panties in a twist over 4k texture downloads???

Are there even any PS4 games with 4k textures???

I dont have a Pro let alone a 4k tv so I'm just curious how that side handles things.

Bruh2504d ago

@darth

No no PS4 game including Horizon, features 4K assets, the console doesn't have the memory bandwidth for them

conanlifts2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

I think most people on this page have probably either changed their drive or use an external. Personally i have about 100gb left from a 2tb external. One thing i am curious about is internal drive speed. Supposedly the X has a faster drive. What is the speed compared to an external drive. Is the internal faster and what affect will this have.

freshslicepizza2504d ago

It is going to be a much lesser issue than the Switch only having 32gb and patch sizes. The Xbox One supports 2 external drives at the same time for a total of 16tb.

tyasia02504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

Nice deflection...

Switch updates are MB's to a GB, 4k textures can be 50+ GB, have fun waiting for those to download.

UltraNova2504d ago

Then there's the question of how many can afford a 500 dollar console...and then how many of them are going to buy an external to go with it...

DJStotty2504d ago

@ Ultranova

Day one for me, already have an external but may get a larger one for the bad boy. This is a product mainly for people that can afford it and are planning on getting/have a 4K TV.

In that case they prob shelled out 700+ for the Tv so yeah, those people can afford it.

UltraNova2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

@DJStotty

Totally agree with you on that. But for the xb1x to succeed its vital to get as many people on board as possible (in order to gain support etc). However the current asking price does not help in that department let alone having to shell out even more for extra storage.

343_Guilty_Spark2504d ago

If you can afford $400 comfortably you can afford $500. Many current Xbox One users are already using external drives.

Death2504d ago

@Ultra,

You are thinking like Xbox One X is a new console instead of a mid gen upgrade. Think of it like it's a new GPU for your PC. It plays all your existing games and has the ability to improve them as well.

donthate2504d ago

@Ultra

If you want the best console can offer, and way ahead of the competition, then yes. You will have to pay up for it. It's not cheap to be on the cutting edge.

If you want something cheaper and lesser experience, there is PS4 Pro. It will likely be on sale for $349 this holiday.

Gh05t2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

@Ultra

if you can afford the $500 console you can afford the $140 4tb drive to go with it.

Or do you buy top of the line sport cars and fill them with 87 octane gas?

I only have 500GB on my Day One, Xbox One and I have managed to survive, keeping games I play installed and removing games I dont, until I need them again... I think others will as well.

MegamanXXX2504d ago

So basically you will be paying $600 dollars buying the X and external hard drive. Dam

4Sh0w2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

lol, Nova,

So you are trying to paint a scenario where someone buys a 4K TV, a more expensive 4K console, but it's a cheap he's that's holding them back, lmao, seriously?

I mean really if you buy alot of games now a externals are already a necessity, unless you don't mind deleting and re-installing games, he'll Microsoft advertises them with X1....I don't know are ps fans still using the internal drive only?

Condemnedman2504d ago

I have three drives connect to my one . Two for games and one for movies and I use a USB adapter . it's overkill but its preparation for when the X lands

hiawa232504d ago

The X1 supports up to 3 drives. I have 3 drives connected to my X1S via a usb hub for 8TB of storage.

BlackWolf122503d ago

Add the cost of 16TB worth of hard drives to the already overpriced console.......

CoLD FiRE2503d ago

Actually it supports more than 2 external HDDs now. I have 3 external HDDs plugged into my X1 for a total of 8TB (including the 1TB internal).

Bigpappy2504d ago

Not a problem for developers. But it might be for gamers who want to have several 4K games and hop from one to the next without erasing anything. So at some point if you are a major Xbox gamer, you are strongly advised to consider buy or savings for and external drive.
I already have a 2 gig, but will add another if it become insufficient. No a deal breaker or sure.

DJStotty2504d ago

Chances are if your a hardcore gamer you already own an external like myself 183 xbox games and counting

Bigpappy2504d ago

I mentioned to say. Not a deal breaker for sure

iDadio2504d ago

I assume you mean 2TB?

"I already have a 2gig" means you went out and got a usb flash drive from a pound shop

Death2504d ago

@idadio,

Not to show my age, but there was a time when I remember 1 GB was like 1 TB of storage. It's all relative.

UnHoly_One2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Death when I was 16 I had a PC with a 500 MB hard drive.

Yes that's MB.

I didn't even know what a GB was.

Now I have a 8TB drive connected to my Xbox and it's almost half full. :D

rainslacker2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Is it really that much of a problem though? Even assuming the average game would play that many games at once, a 1TB drive can still handle quite a few games along with their updates. I think the issue is more the size of the actual download, not the storage space involved. So, if the base game is 50GB, and the update is lets say 25GB, that's 75GB per game. Assuming 300GB for system stuff, that means about 7-8 games on the included hard drive.

I can understand the more hardcore gamer keeping more games on hand, but they are more likely to want to upgrade space anyhow, and the money wouldn't be that much of an issue for many of them.

@Death

You youngin's today. You're all spoiled. I remember when my 512KB was like 10TB today.:) My TRS-80 was rockin it. Built the memory module myself for more than 16GB of system memory costs today.

Brazz2504d ago

The 1tb HD will, most likely, feel like a 500 Gb, perhaps less.

XanderZane2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

I've upgraded my HDD for my PS4 and XBox One. Did anyone really think 500GB would be enough this gen? When I get my XB1X, I will have a 12TB external HDD waiting to plug into it. I have a 4TB on my XBox One and it's already most then 1/2 full. I have a 1.5TB on my PS4 and only about 150GB left. You pretty much need an external HDD in the future for any new game console that supports them. External HDD are pretty cheap now too. I got my 4TB HDD for about $150 some 3 years ago. It's probably under $100 now for it.

I didn't see anyone complaining about this for the PS4 Pro. You had to download 4K texture patches for their games as well that took up more storage space. Was there any problems at that time? I don't think so.

2504d ago
xsta1ker2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

this is not a problem in the lest... this is not a new console it's a mid gen upgrade
I'll bet 80% of xbox users have already upgraded to an external hard drive.

i purchased a 3gb WD passport 2nd yr in.
it's nice when you can just plug & play

no opening up the hardware this will not be a problem.
as far as disk it's dead already.

fathertime44642503d ago

Not really, just have to put games onto a uhd blue ray instead of a standard one

CaptainObvious8782503d ago

"who these days has limited broadband bandwidth, especially if you’re a gamer? Trust me, if you do, the Xbox One X is not targeted at you."

I live in Australia and have the most expensive fiber optic internet plan you can buy and guess what? It's still capped. There are other internet companies that claim to have unlimited plans, but they still throttle your speed down to dial up speeds when you go over a limited data limit. Australian internet companies just continue to live in the past.

And how many other developed countries have the same archaic capped internet?

So author, how about you get your head out of your ass, learn that there are other countries out there other than the US and realise this is a big problem for a lot of core gamers.

Not going to fit on a disc? wont the games be on UHD disks?

Then again no they wont as they need to be inserted into the xbox one also (blonde moment)

SojournUK2504d ago

I thought they'd come on bluray discs

nitus102503d ago

Maximum capacity for the Bluray disks that are used in the PS3, PS4 and XB1 is 25GB (single layer) 50GB (dual layer). Obviously, the UHD Bluray disk is going to be bigger (ie. Triple layer 100GB and Quadruple is 128GB) but to bring out games on those disks is going to alienate the original XB1 owners which are approximately 20+ million people.

Sure it is possible that Microsoft could come out with a UHD Bluray for huge capacity games for XB1s and XB1x owners with two or more Bluray disks for the original XB1 owners but the one who would benefit from that would be Sony.

Buy movies on UHD Bluray disks and guess who benefits?

Inzo2503d ago

Sony and Pioneer are working on a 1TB disc.

Inzo2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Apologies, Its Sony and "Panasonic" and they are working on a 3 TB disk

2pacalypsenow2504d ago

I'm sure they will fit the game on a regular Blu Ray disk, and the rest will be downloaded. Similar to the texture packs on the 360 last gen.

Cobra9512504d ago

Don't know what you're talking about. I played 360 extensively since '07, and I never had to download any texture packs for any game.

2pacalypsenow2504d ago

They were included on a second DVD, Splinter Cell Blacklist had it, though I doubt they would include a second Blu Ray disk just for textures in 2017.

iDadio2504d ago

The problem is that people underestimate just how big these texture packs can be. Rainbow 6 Siege ultra texture pack is an extra 30gig and that's a pretty small game.

ShadowWolf7122504d ago

Games gotta play on the vanilla Xbone too.

x_RadicalAura_x2504d ago

No, sadly only standard BD. UHD BD should become the new standard though ASAP.

Dark_Knightmare22503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Yeah but it won't till next gen because it makes no business sense to leave og x1 and PS4 owners behind

hiawa232504d ago

The games are on blu ray disc, 50GBs, anything above that will have to be downloaded like many of our games now which many are much more than 50GBs

Anybody who doesn't have an external hd must be crackers anyway, even if it's just to keep the main drive free.

Was the first thing I brought when I had my xb1.

2pacalypsenow2504d ago

I'm not sure you understand what the slang "crackers" means.

KillBill2504d ago

You must be young... 'crackers' used to also mean 'crazy'.

InTheZoneAC2504d ago

Clearly he was meaning crazy, you don't have to be a certain age to understand that.

Death2504d ago

I'm pretty sure it's "white folks" he's referring to as "crackers". Hard to believe racism is still alive today in 1760.

2pacalypsenow2504d ago

Cracker can also mean "poor white" which fits better with the fact hes referring to someone who hasn't purchased something.

BuildTheWall2504d ago

@2pacalypsenow Damn these downloads are going to suck. Why do so many people get offended by things like cracker & nigger? I am a proud cracker & nigger has nothing to do with color. Niggers come in all races / colors & the term has to do with a persons attitude / way of living & to be honest both of my uncles on fathers side are niggers & they are white. They are both alcoholics , thieves , drug addicts & are abusive.

Gh05t2504d ago

No, it means you know how to manage your playable game library.

I have over 1000 games on steam... I dont even want to know how much space would be needed to install them all at once.

I keep a handful installed, and remove them when I know I wont play them for a while.

I have a 500GB drive in my Xbox, Never had an issue with space, by the time it says make space there is always some game I dont play anymore that I remove and space is open.

DJStotty2503d ago

I have an external as i am a collector and play a lot of different games and cant be bothered with the storage management every week so keep them all installed until i am done with them and then delete.

Rik_Mayall2504d ago

Chances are is that he/she is from the UK and crackers in the UK means ,crazy, mental, loony etc...

annoyedgamer2504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

Or just don't have alot of spare cash on hand...

No need to call names, alot of people can be hard up for cash, you do not know the circumstances. When I first got the X1, I did not have the extra money to go out and buy an external drive either.

MegaMohsi2504d ago

so when a console markets itself as 4K and only includes a 1TB hard drive (i'm including the Pro here too), knowing how big some of these 4K assets can be, we're not allowed to complain? If every game is 100gb then a 1 TB HDD will hold like what 8 games? That's ridiculous.

kayoss2504d ago

Cost bro... think about the cost.

343_Guilty_Spark2504d ago

He's already crying it's $499 and he wants more storage....

More internal storage will cost more $$$$

Ju2504d ago

I agree with the Pro also having just a 1TB drive. The games hardly reach 100GB, not even HZD. Not sure what's different. I could only get 4 or 5 games onto my 500GB XBO, Gears4 clocking in at 90GB (and I don't know why). I do have a 2TB internal and an additional 1TB external drive on my Pro. But I still wonder how they will deliver that if every game is 100GB. UHD would work. But will they split the user base?

Death2504d ago

UHD would be too slow. Download to HDD makes most sense since the disc applies to everyone and the additional assets can be distributed based on need digitally. I would suspect many of those upgrading to Scorpio and Pro are buying digitally anyway.

Mulando2503d ago

You totally forget, the Pro has almost no additional main memory (except for that 0,5GB it can use). So you just cant load bigger texture sizes, because the memory is already full.
On the other hand, many texture packs out there don't bring such a big benefit Sometimes yes, but "utlra" textures are most times not that much better than the step before.

DiRtY2504d ago

Same thing can be said about original PS4 and original Xbox one. 500GB with 50GB / games average...

DoubleM702504d ago (Edited 2504d ago )

Compression Techniques. They squeezed allot out of those DVD9s last generation.

Goldby2504d ago

Multiple disc based games say otherwise

Death2504d ago

Like? I know Metal Gear is the fun game to use since it required a huge Blu-ray Disc custom made for the game, but reality is the digital foot print was 9 gigs. I think there were a couple multidisc games, but I'm struggling to remember which they are.

XMarkstheSpot2504d ago

Mass Effect, LA Noir, I think Halo 4 had multiple, Dead Space, Max Payne, GTA V, are a couple games I remember had multiple disks. Prob a few more, but the vast majority of games were single, unless it was a big game towards the end of the 360 gen

rainslacker2503d ago (Edited 2503d ago )

Higher res textures used for 4K(There is really not anything termed 4K textures in graphic art) tend to use a lot less compression than those used for lower resolutions. The reason being is that compression can introduce artifacts that when mapped onto more pixels means that that imperfection can actually look bad in certain cases.

For the most part, these textures use very little to no compression depending on the nature of the texture.

Even non-real time compression(like zip files) doesn't do much if the data needs to be maintained. Graphic compression like say jpg is typically minimal or non-existent.

nitus102503d ago

Dual density DVD (ie. DVD9) could only hold 8.5GB. The XBox360 only had a DVD drive and could read dual density DVD's but it never had a Bluray or even an HD-DVD drive although it did have an external HD-DVD drive which was never used for games.

uth112503d ago

The best compression techniques are lossy and would degrade the quality off these textures
