My Best and Worst in Tech: Programming

Whenever I consider my triumphs and failures involving technology one thing always comes to mind: Programming. From leaving the impression of a keyboard on my forehead to waking the neighbors at 2:30 in the morning upon a working solution, coding has emotionally put me through my paces. I feel that the sentiment must be felt amongst plenty others in the community.

The capabilities of hardware have always been bound by how well an individual coded the means in which we interact with hardware, and how it interacts with us. It's a unique perspective for those on the other side of the fence, and I encourage anyone who hasn't been there to try it out, albeit in a more relaxed fashion than my introduction.

Being the modern day googling, techspy visiting tech guru that I am we really have to take a Delorean to 88 mph to bring back those days when I had so many issues and so much fun. I was eleven years old when I took my first programming class, more specifically a video game programming class. I had no idea what I was getting into.

The joy of changing variables and watching things crash quickly became the stress of getting level two just to start. From implementing timers, high scores, and saves, to multiple generas, even to netcode all the basics were covered. Quite the experience for a first timer, much akin to crashing that Delorean head first into a brick wall.

In more modern times I know about six different programming languages and regularly use two of them as they just fit into what I do. While not something I would want to do for a living, I am proud of my capabilities and accomplishments in the realm of coding. While I won't say I've done anything spectacularly unique or notable, I will say that the learning process over the years has been both infuriating and fun and I would do it all again.

Feel free to leave your thoughts and experiences below. I'd be my pleasure to discuss, alas I'm short on time currently.

Ahh I never got the chance to take up coding, is it every too late ? It's been in my mind for a while now but I can never find the time to really apply myself to learning how to code. Exams exams exams that's the most common topic at this moment in time... If there's any way to learn coding effectively with limited time; let me know, I'd appreciate it.

It's never to late to teach an old dog new tricks. Still, it is very difficult learn when you are short on time. You never know how long it may take to find and fix the smallest of errors. When you are learning, I suggest finding someone who is experienced to look over your work when you're stuck and be quick to go to google.

Naw man, theres never been a better time to learn coding. These days as a casual coder you don't need to anything underneath the abstraction layer of a high level language. Check out Ruby.

Languages like Ruby and Python are great for what they are intended for, they do exactly what you ASK (not always what you WANT). And therein lies the problem with learning those languages first. With high level languages you can get stuck and be forced to move to a lower level just to get what you need done, while starting with a lower level language you can always build out in the direction you need.

Im finishing up my senior year of a BS in CS. There has been times where i just wanted to drop out and do mcdonalds, and times where I feel like I can start the next big thing. The woes of navigating ultra compressed structures of your own logic...

We all go through the ups and downs of coding, but the end product always keeps us moving forward. Quite the experience. BTW, congrads and good luck.
