to me it sounds like you're giving up. don't let them take what's for everyone to themselves, fight back! your not gonna let another country invade and take all your land, right? No, people need to look at things in context, and realize that not everything they see or hear is meant the way they see or hear it. Following this rule, 90% of the crap that people complain about on a daily basis would probably just disappear.

The swastika still isn't a nazi symbol, or at least not that exclusively, and can indeed keep it's original meaning. But, when used in the context of Nazi viewpoints, it's is bad. But, it's meaning is seen as horrific now, which is why it isn't displayed like it used to be by some religions.

I get that time can indeed change the meaning of things. I've argued that same thing on countless occassions. But, in this case, the context is being taken away to help push the idea that this is the new meaning. This was done because people were using it in a different context, but the devs didn't put it in there like that.

It would seem to me, instead of Activision trying to promote the negative conscription of a well understood gesture....probably the most well known, or at least most used sign language symbol....they just go after the people who are using it in the negative context to say, "This is not OK". Maybe even explain why in their bans of the people who use it.

This gesture is not racist. It was not created to be racist, nor help promote racism. It's a sign language symbol that was adopted by the general public to mean exactly what it was intended to mean, "Are you OK", "I am OK", "You did OK", or just "OK". I have no clue why it means anything to the white supremacist, other than it started as a joke, and now it somehow is associated with their viewpoints. it was put into this game's animation emotes to mean, "OK". The devs didn't put it in to mean anything more. The whole attention that this symbol has been associated with white supremacy is so new in the press, that it's causing reaction that is pre-mature to knowing if this gesture will have a long term meaning associated in the way it has been as of late.

People are now using the gesture to spread their bigotry, but that is just another meaning for the gesture. But, context matters, and ignoring context is why people get so damn upset all the time nowadays.

Instead of banning the gesture in the game, ban the people who use it because they're idiots or bigots spreading racism. Removing the gesture is a band aid on the immaturity or ignorance that will be spread in other ways, the way it always has when things like this crop up.

Get over yourself. Every single comment you make tries to cement this as a racist symbol, and anyone who doesn't view it as a racist symbol, thus doesn't buy into all of the "controversy" behind it, a racist.

Again; get the hell over yourself and realize the world is bigger than just your viewpoint.

See, I can make false equivalencies as well. Somehow, I'd be more upset about taking the power of langauge away from a deaf person, than I would be about taking it away from a bigoted a**wipe, but yeah, I guess I'm a racist for defending people's rights to communicate. People are using the symbol to piss people off. They see the media in a panic over a harmless gesture. People losing their mind and watching out for the racist boogeymen around every corner. So people troll them even more. It's hilarious.

Before the whole thing broke, I'd pretty much never used the OK gesture. Once the 4chan meme became a reality, my brother and I immediately did it and laughed. Not because we support white supremacy, since we think racists are vile, but because it's funny that a group of trolls caused such a panic among gullible, idiotic people. By treating the sign as if it is racist, you are giving power to racists. Apparently it doesn't matter if the vast majority of people use the sign innocently, apparently if a tiny number of people use it for other means we should how our heads and let their will be done. Hate trumps love, according to your logic.

It's not businesses job to educate the public, it's their job to make as much money as possible and if they see something that provides them nothing but has a small risk attached to it due to a minor number of people using it as a symbol of hate and an unknown number of people now associating it with hate then they will minimise the risk.

So the point I'm trying to make is less about "offending people" and more about not perpetuating something that is being used by a hate group as a symbol.

You are all free to disagree, as I figured folks would as made obvious by the way I closed my last comment. Ultimately we disagree on it being taken down, but I think people often see something being removed for it being problematic as folks being triggered and offended. I argue these are not the same thing, and reiterate that the reactions from people about this kind of stuff are far louder, and way more fragile snowflake sounding than the act of it's removal ever does.

But, feel free to feel how you feel. I cannot take that away from you. I've stated my case. I'd hope that even if you disagree you take some perspective with you regardless. I'm the kind of person who would often rather take steps to move forward rather than keep everything exactly as it is now or always has been.
