Next Gen Consoles are Going to Have a Major Storage Issue

As file sizes become larger at a faster rate than storage is becoming cheaper, how will gamers mange storage on next gen consoles?

Things like BCPak, and machine learning to fill in low resolution textures on Xbox and the Kracken on the ps5 can help a lot, by using smaller file sizes with both compression and just lower res textures which are way less storage space. Who knows if it will help or not for sure

Not sure why the dislikes

Now I just hope thats enough since pcie 4 may not be cheap for a while and even once it is it will be subject to the price fluctuations of storage we've seen in the past

You’re gonna download these games fast anyway

Babadook71414d ago (Edited 1414d ago )

I think the best solution is buy a cheap external HDD. You will just have to transfer the file to internal when replaying an old game, but its a cheap easy fix if you need access to many games in a month.

Considering Sony already stated that the fast loading speeds of their SSD would help to eliminate multiple duplicate assets, then games should actually be smaller for next gen than current on consoles for that reason. Maybe i misunderstood but graphical assets is what takes up most room on any game and if you don't need to duplicate them to save loading times because of their extremely faster drive on next gen, doesn't that cut down on game sizes? Which gives your more drive space for games?

Plus like others have mentioned use a regular external harddrive to store games then move them to the internal drive when you play them. No problem at all.

JimBeans1415d ago

You're guessing. You have no idea or knowledge on the topic.

dumahim1415d ago

To be clear, the removal of data duplication has nothing to do with loading speed, but the lack of seek time of SSDs.

--Onilink--1415d ago (Edited 1415d ago )

The thing is, that is supposed to help also developers include more variety of assets (and higher resolution) since they will not require to have them duplicated as well. So its also very easy to erase any space gains from that.
I honestly dont really expect game sizes to decrease that much when they launch, but I do think the updates will see a big boost, thats one part of disk management that was getting very complicated for devs

JackBNimble1414d ago

Sony actually said file sizes should be smaller because the ssd doesn't need to duplicate files and updates should also be smaller.

The biggest gain will actually come from not requiring redundant assets. Currently, a file can be duplicated hundreds of times on the disc because data is stored via asset packs for quicker loading. The compression will help as well, as it can further optimize the amount of disc space that is used. SSD doesn't require seek times like physical discs do, so the need to make asset packs to speed things up is made obsolete. However, compression actually can work better with asset packs due to wasted block space from individual files, but the asset packs can be made smaller as a general rule.

I think 1TB(or less) is going to be an issue for those that keep a lot of games at once on their disc. By a lot, I mean those who just keep stuff on there indefinitely. But 1TB can still hold a reasonable amount of games in many cases. I have 1TB now, and I have about 20-30 games on my drive. Some that I routinely play, others that I downloaded and want to play them at some point and if I didn't download them, I'd probably forget I had them.

Not all games are going to be massive data hogs.

crazyCoconuts1415d ago

I agree, and Sony has to know this. I'm still hoping that one of their yet unannounced features has something to do with storage management. Stream the game you own and it will redownload in the background or overnight. Or some kind of fast and automatic transfer from a hard drive to SSD on demand.

I had quite a few on my system, until Warzone came along

Smclaren19851414d ago (Edited 1414d ago )

Your actually right in a lot of respects games today have multiple copy’s of the same files to try and help with the slower speed, this won’t be the case next gen it’s not that they will use lower resolution textures although it’s a huge possibility it’s more to do with the compression technique Sony’s philosophy of building the console around faster storage and compressed file use it’s one huge step ahead of Xbox. Infact there whole storage system eliminates all the steps between the hardrive cpu/gpu issues that exist today completely the series x is leaps ahead of today’s consoles but people seem to be convinced the ps5 tech will only result in faster loading, part of that is because Sony didn’t explain it well enough. By the time they reveal Games people will see the huge advances Sony’s design will bring beyond just loading its absolute genius the thought behind the tech developers from all sides arnt praising it fir no reason I still think regardless we will run into storage issues no amount of trickery can eliminate it altogether, put simply it would have made them way to expensive

NeoGamer2321414d ago

I disagree. I already have storage issues on PS4 and XO...

The forced use of SSD for certain games means you only have 1TB to play with. Even with compression this probably means about 20 large games. To be feasible I need space for 100's of games.

Until this is resolved I am going to be cautious about buying more then one or two next gen consoles.

Mithan1414d ago

That is partially correct. The purpose of AI Machine Learning to decompress textures for the Xbox 4 and PS5 is to lower the delivery cost of games from a ISP Transport level. It has nothing to do with savings space on the internal hard drive, that has been mis-characterized. This will not be done "on the fly", it will be a step done during the installation phase of a game.

A 100GB game could be compressed to 50GB and sent, then decompressed back up to 100GB on your hard drive. With traditional games, you would need to download the 100GB of data, with this new method of AI Machine Decompression on the textures, it would allow a smaller download.

Note: The numbers I am using are made up. It isn't a 50% compression ratio, it varies by texture quality, size and how much of the quality of the AI tool they are using.

This tech is machine agnostic, and will be readily available on Xbox, Playstation, Steam, Epic, Origin, Apple Store, etc in the future, as an opt in basis. However, since these companies all pay huge sums for Bandwidth, they will probably move to push this forward sooner rather than later, so 3-5 year time line for large games.

You can downvote me now because... why not.

Kribwalker1414d ago (Edited 1414d ago )

BCPack works through compression, but the ai texture system MS are talking about does reduce space, not through compression, but by sending a lower resolution texture and using AI Machine learning to up res it.
“ One of the studios inside Microsoft has been experimenting with using [machine learning] models for asset generation," Gwertzman said. "It’s working scarily well. To the point where we’re looking at shipping really low-res textures and having ML models uprez the textures in real time. You can’t tell the difference between the hand-authored high-res texture and the machine-scaled-up low-res texture, to the point that you may as well ship the low-res texture and let the machine do it”

the lower the resolution is on the texture the less MB’s it is.

Just use an older hardrive for storage and then transfer the games as needed. I know Xbox series x will support that feature.

Nitrowolf21415d ago (Edited 1415d ago )

Edited: Misread comment, yeah this is the best option atm I feel.

Store games you won't play as much on am external to save on download time

ApocalypseShadow1415d ago

Be Rich has the best answer. The same drives you use to store your games, will still be useful for next gen storage. Transfer the games you are playing, store the ones you don't off system. It's not complicated. And as usual, the more consumers buy memory, the faster they become standard and cheaper. Just like SD cards, micro SD cards and HDDs. So will SSD. I remember when micro SD cards cost ridiculous prices. Now, they pretty much give them away. Now, a micro SD of half a terabyte is affordable. Something that fits on your finger.

It's only bad for gamers who like digital only and fill up their drives. If you have to have every game you're not playing at your command? Yeah. It will affect you.

Or, buy disc games that have large file sizes. No need to download a large file size, no need to worry about data caps, no need to store the game on an HHD or SSD until you need it to play.

Also, this article seems to be pushing streaming as a solution. Like it's a Puff Piece pumping Stadia and Xcloud. Sorry. Most of us still don't want streaming and being reliant on the internet. NO internet, NO gaming. Now that's EASY to understand. And I still don't want it.

FinalFantasyFanatic1415d ago

"the faster they become standard and cheaper. Just like SD cards, micro SD cards and HDDs. So will SSD"

This is what I'm looking forward to, prices for SSDs are slowly becoming cheaper, but I hope next gen consoles will really drive the prices down to the point where it's affordable to consider using large capacity SSDs as storage drives instead of mechanical (I'm not expecting it to be cheaper than mechanical for a long time, just significantly closer in price). It's annoying waiting for disc platters in mechanical hard drives to spin up when you want to access a drive you haven't used for a while.

nirwanda1415d ago

Streaming stuff in doesn't have to be full games it can also be assets Microsoft flight simulator uses cloud to stream in texture asset's.
Everything is entirely game dependant , some games need more space some games need more speed.
In the case of ms flight SIM it needs 2000000gb's of data.
You can still play flight SIM offline without 5m/s internet(similar to netflix streams) but it will run in potato mode

RamRod881415d ago

That is exactly what I plan on doing. Keep whatever I'm currently playing on the SSD, then everything else on an external.

Tony-A1415d ago

Exactly what I plan on doing. I already have a 2TB HDD so that’s where all of my PS4 games will go.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1415d ago (Edited 1415d ago )

The data transfer rate with HDD is much slower than a SSD. I have an external HDD and an external SSD. Trust me when I say this because I tested it on downloads from Steam; the data transfer rate for the HDD is 2 to 3 times slower than the SSD while downloading the same game.

xX-oldboy-Xx1415d ago

The transfer rates should exponentially faster that we have today. I can see a problem.

DRambo1415d ago

In terms of PS5, I understand that only PS4 games can be stored on an external drive and PS5 games need to be installed on the SSD and can't be dropped in from the external.

Parasyte1414d ago

That’s what I was thinking. I already am using a 2TB portable hard drive with my One X, and I’d hate for it to go to waste.

ps3rider1416d ago

indeed it will, games in this generation reach space requirement of 100GB but here I am talking about big big titles.

nirwanda1415d ago

I misread that thought it said tities

IanTH1414d ago (Edited 1414d ago )

titIes titles...first one I typed with an uppercase "i" and 2nd one I typed with a lowercase "L"...so, it sort of does say tities!

Born2Game831414d ago

I hope final consumer PS5 will have 2tb. That 825/50 is so small these days. At least u can buy fast nvme drives later down the line.

ziggurcat1416d ago

No they won't. You can connect external HDDs.

Maybe Microsoft, Sony and third parties can ask Nintendo nicely to license their compression technology and make file sizes smaller.

RazzerRedux1415d ago (Edited 1415d ago )

Why? They are using BCPak and Kracken.

rainslacker1415d ago

Sony and MS are already going to be using two of the better compression algorithms out there, coupled with hardware decompression so it's actually fast.

L7CHAPEL1415d ago

when you're talkin last-gen ports and games with far below a hundred gig, but aren't that graphic-intensive to begin with because they're playing them on a switch, not even close to the same thing

SierraGuy1414d ago

Switch isn't even a console.

Ask Nintendo? Isn't there a lot of games can't run without downloading?

averagejoe261414d ago

You mean "ask Nintendo how to downgrade your game so it looks like it's running on a potato"

No thanks
