First artificial leaf that turns water into oxygen and hydrogen energy, uses inexpensive materials

What's Hawt: Daniel G. Nocera points out that the artificial leaf responds to the vision of a famous Italian chemist who, in 1912, predicted that scientists one day would uncover the “guarded secret of plants.” The most important of those, Nocera says, is the process that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The artificial leaf has a sunlight collector sandwiched between two films that generate oxygen and hydrogen gas. When dropped into a jar of water in the sunlight, it bubbles away, releasing hydrogen that can be used in fuel cells to make electricity.

Sounds very promising. Can't wait to see this implemented on a large scale one day.

Thatguy-3104360d ago

If this is true then doesn't this open possibilities for life outside earth?

Imagine finding vast oceans on other plants and being able to literally put oxygen on the planet.

TERRAFORM ALL THE PLANETS!

Noctis Aftermath4360d ago

All of them? lets start off with Titan or Europa first imo.

kreate4360d ago

somehow i cant imagine finding vast oceans in other planets.... at least the kind of ocean im thinking of.

justpassinggas4360d ago

There already is an ocean on Europa - but it's frozen.

madjedi4359d ago (Edited 4359d ago )

@noctis Titan has a methane atmosphere, that rains liquid methane, which when mixed with oxygen can go boom.

Europa is too far away to be relevant, focus on mars first it has water locked in the polar icecaps.

Are people thinking of encelidious(spelled wrong likely) when they say titan.

Till we develop an engine that can get up to the speed of light or at least a decent percentage of it(25 or higher), large scale missions to the outer planets are kinda a waste of effort.

@just The moon europa has a frozen surface but it is believed to have a vast ocean of liquid water buried beneth several miles of ice.

Well! Nice here that they are using inexpensive material..

hkgamer4360d ago

depends what they actually mean by inexpensive.
Also have to consider how long this process will take and if it is actually viable in means of providing enough hydrogen/oxygen for our needs.
But I guess it is a big achievement.
