No Windows 8 for Pirates

Noble Press: This morning at MWC in Barcelona Microsoft release the Windows 8 Developer Preview. Little did anyone expect to see a "enter product key" phase pre-installation. This means that anyone that is willing to test out this BETA product MUST have a Windows 7 or Windows Vista key.

Currently there is no way to install Windows 8 on a illegitimate copy of Windows 7 or Vista.

As far as we have found it is not possible to do a clean update... it must be upgraded.

So wait, if I want to add windows 8 to a computer with Linux, I will first have to buy and install windows 7 and then install windows 8?

Windows 8 better be free with a purchase of windows 7.

It's the Windows 8 beta.

Not the full version which isn't out yet.

The betas wouldn't be much use for a dailly used computer, have bugs etc, lots of Windows 7 beta users complained about how there wasn't any drivers for it but that's due to needing all new windows 7 drivers which 99% of stuff didn't have or you couldn't easily get them.

And who cares anyway? W8 is being developed for Tablets solely. It will be compatible with PC's but it was designed for tablets to combat iOS and Android.

I currently have an illegitimate copy of Windows 7 but I'm ordering a legit copy from Amazon in a week.

Windows 8 doesn't look worthy of a purchase to me just yet.

People you people keep wasting money on a company that is greedy as hell, there is other alternatives suck as ubuntu linux. Is not prone too viruses, and is more stable than any microsoft offerings. This is like the Call of duty case, they realese a broken video game again, again and again and you keep buying the same shit. With windows is the same thing, I know that most of the games or programs are not vailable to linux, but that could change!, look at the moblie space, we see ios and adroid that is linux based and now android has the mayority of the market, you guys should support linux on the desktop to have a reliable system on our pc, not this nonsense with the Micro$oft os. Suport it and it will be supported by developers. And the OS f is free just as android. www.ubuntu.com my favorite dristro.

You need to get two things straight:

- Linux is prone to viruses, but there aren't really any because it is not a dominant system, so virus coders are not going to spend a lot of time creating programs to attack a few systems. They will go after the most popular OS. Remember when the Apple fanboys said iOS was inpenetrable? They are actually suffering more and more as the system is becoming more popular, and recent studies showed that iOS was more vulnerable than windows (just that ppl didn't exploit those weaknesses as often as a windows hacker)

- Have you even used Windows 7?

Linux is a pretty solid OS but unfortunately for those of us who run professional software like Adobe products and the like, Linux is drastically lacking compared to Windows and even OSX.

However, I just built a new computer and might partition my HDD for Ubuntu. I don't think I could rely on Linux for work or anything though. As a side OS certainly, but not a primary one.

its possible, but it depends on what you do. for instance if you rely on photoshop or similar programs you can use gimp or similar programs to achieve the same goal, however one area where open source software fails is in video editing.

The problem with all Linux distros is they are primarily a server OS and a desktop OS last.

You don't see games on Linux because they don't/can't support a DX driver base.

They have OpenGL but only ID Software support that base and even the Rage engine doesn't run on OpenGL at all.

OpenGL is a fair bit behind DX these days maybe years at best, main reason why many renders don't bother with it anymore.

The next bit is Software on Linux has to comply with the open source code base GPL they have and 99% of companies won't comply with the GPL, as they don't hand out their code base for programs.

So you end up with a OS that's really made for running an email/web server and so happens to have a few extra bits tacked on as well.

They also kicked out the #1 GUI speed up guy so the OS/GUI side is really lacking in speed and and that code base will be a mess it might have changed but the main people running the linux code bases aren't interested in GUI speed ups so doubtful.

Do you realize that the Wii, PS3, Apple devices and everything that doesn't comes from MS run on openGL right? So the rage engine has to fully support openGL to be able to play on PS3. Even emulators for the Snes, PS1, etc. have openGL support. Is just that some people are too stupid to realize this fact.

What MS has with this industry is a monopoly, they aren't #1 because they offer good alternatives or products you know. But if people started supporting other OS's like Linux things would change for the better but with no support from the public then there's no support from developers either.

umm... merely because the operating system and kernel are gpl does not mean that the software that runs on them is or has to be, if that were true then every thing on android (which is a modified off shoot of the linux kernel with other open source bits) has to be open source (which we know isnt)

i think what you are refering to is that most distros prefer open source to proprietary, however if you check out ubuntu's app store you will see plenty of closed source software that you can buy. also if you install linux mint (which has some closed source software bundled with it) requires you to accept a eula during installation for the closed source stuff (which is optional)

So you're telling us that if we want to play PC games, we should pirate Windows?

For a lot of people, Linux would probably be better. But there are still a lot of people that want to play PC games and the only way to do that is with Windows. It's most likely going to stay that way too so there's really not much choice in the matter.

No one. But Microsoft needs a reason to wipe Vista users from mainstream support, so that they don't have much choice but to "upgrade"

And now they have a killswitch, no clean install......
Technology just keeps getting more and more inconvenient and more directly dictated by the creator. All in the name of preventing a few pirates, used sales, etc.

Oh well. I'm almost done with college, which Microsoft has a monopoly on (every paper must be submitted as a word document, the idiotic intro to computers class is basically an intro to Windows 7 class, so many classes using windows only software, etc). I'll finally be able to move on to Linux or maybe even Mac.

Besides, I'd rather deal with paying for everything (and getting quality) than having a bloated, operating system that they're only going to "upgrade" to less features and more bloat every 3-5 years.

I have windows 8 installed on my work laptop and i have used it today and i have used it like i did with my with my windows 7 pc for it support and so far im impressed with it. I know some people are complaining about it switching between the old ui and the old ui but it has to work this way just like wine dose on Linux.

I am using a none touch laptop and what they have done to the system is impressive and a big change. Yes people will not like it because it is different but windows has been the same os since windows 95 and it is time for a change and with tablets becoming more popular and the same with touch screen pcs ms needed a new us and rather than offering a limited os like the ipad and android they have give us a full os but it has been designed for two different processor's one intel and and and the other arm

This is another good move by ms in my opinion as they can sell full blown os tablets pcs ultrabooks and laptops to business users and arm tablets to new users and home users who dont need backwoods compatible tablets.

Anyone who is saying they dont like windows 8 try it before you decided on what its like.

they missed one thing on this. You can install it onto a computer that doesn't have windows 7. You just need to choose install on different partition and then it gives you an option to put it on a flash drive. And there you go, just use the key you purchased there.

And now I just noticed that the author messed up...

wtf? When I ran the Windows 8 Consumer Preview downloader from Microsoft they gave me a key to use in Windows 8. You're not supposed to use your previous windows keys.
