"Apple has asked for more clarity over how patents deemed crucial to industry standards should be handled. The firm wrote a letter to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in November, which has now been reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The iPhone maker called for "more consistent and transparent" application of rules designed to ensure that such intellectual properties were licensed."

Might not seem like much, but these changes would put an end to all of the lawsuits we have been seeing in the past year(especially in the phone/tablet market). Microsoft recently backed Apple also so there is even a greater case it will change.
Personally I think it is a good thing, since if every product was not allowed to "share" some patented material then we consumers would be screwed and every product would be a shell of it's former self and be useless.
