Engineering bacteria for environmental cleanup

ArsTechnica: "E. coli, a bacterium that resides in your gut, has been the center of bioengineering efforts for decades. Biologists and chemists have manipulated E. coli to perform diverse functions, such as emitting fluorescent light, doing math, and copying artificial DNA. Professor Justin Gallivan and his research group at Emory University came up with a new strategy to employ for the popular organism a few years ago; his group proposed that E. coli can be reprogrammed to "seek and destroy" harmful chemicals."
