Many gaming rig GPUs are worth more than the total combined cost to build them at the time they were put together.

Yup, the inflated costs of graphics cards is taking the piss. I recently built a desktop with the primary goal of 4k gaming however looking at the sheer difference in prices of graphics cards back from when I put together the overall cost and the current prices, I went and got a 1050ti for the time being until things settle down a bit.

crypto-mining is a virus thats damaging the entire PC environment.
everything from hardware prices going up to websites being hacked to peoples pcs getting hijacked to mine is being affected by this. not to mention an increase in its popularity is also a cause for ransomware attacks on the rise where people can demand to be paid in crypto-currency so they can continue to remain anonymous.

in all honesty, crypto-currency in the present stage is nothing positive at all and while it has the potential to be used for honest things, up until now it hasnt been. any crypto-millionaires that came along have sold up and converted back to every day currencies like dollars/euros/pounds so that should tell you something.

I'd disagree if you look at why it was made and some real world examples some people in Venezuela recently had Bitcoin and when there currency crashed most people couldn't afford bread some people who held Bitcoin became millionaires overnight that's the positives of it

there are always alternatives for when a currency crashes. look no further than zimbabwe. as for the pros and cons...the cons far outweigh the pros, so much so, that its really nothing more than a leech at this point. like i stated in my original comment, that while it has the potential to be used for honest purposes, 80% of its usage seems for more negatives than anything else. also those overnight millionaires you speak of, most of, if not all, have gone back to everyday currencies. i mean the the co-founder of bitcoin.com has sold all his bitcoins, that should speak volumes.
