Really hoping he can help make some headway here. I've seen families go through this, having to take care of one of their own suffering from the disease. It's truly horrible :(

Both my mother and my father had Alzheimer's in their early 60's before passing. It's awful. It's like the person dies long before they really die. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

Sadly this won't make any difference. It's just money, what we need is a cure.

Brian76554922275d ago

Money can lead to a cure, it's called funding and it can indeed make a difference.

DillyDilly2275d ago (Edited 2275d ago )

Or another way of looking at this is its sad that it takes something happening to someone close for them to give a damn. Maybe if people with money cared cures would be made faster instead of waiting until it hits them right at home ? Something that could maybe be avoided for future families ? But nope they just don't care unless it hits them. So no Bill Gates does not get kudos for this in this regard as he WOULD NOT CARE OTHERWISE

@Dilly
erm.......rriiiiight. because if you had $100million dollars in your bank account giving it all away for cures for diseases is the only thing you'll do with all that money. please stop taking the "holier than thou" route here. whether hes contributed because of family reasons or otherwise, he's still contributed more than you ever will.

DillyDilly, how nice of you to ignore all the other funding the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation does do like trying to make a polio free world. Did someone in his family have polio? Go look up the foundation and stop being so salty.

I'm reminded of the movie Vanilla Sky.

"What's the answer to 99 out of 100 questions?"

"Money."

The more funding, the more progress becomes possible in any endeavor. And the fact is that Gates is not obligated to give a penny to this cause. It certainly won't help his father. It's too late for him. So the large contribution by Gates is indeed purely altruistic at this point. His father only served to bring the serious issue into his consciousness.

camel_toad2275d ago

Gates is one of the most charitable people in the world. If there is a more charitable multi-billionaire in the world I would be surprised. It's unfortunate for him that this happened to someone he knows and loves but it's fortunate for the cause.
