Fake news and the spreading of falsehoods can't be stopped without super strict moderation, which is unfeasible on social media with so many users. The only way would be to block domains, but the problem is even reputable sources dabble in fake news due to poor research.
We should focus more on educating people about critical thinking and researching to determine what holds and what doesn't. This applies to journalists too, they've gotten very lazy as well.

Speed-Racer2628d ago

This is what happens when everyone gets a voice sadly. It's like YouTube on a mass scale.

Stringerbell2628d ago

Education is one thing, massive amounts of money ie the ad revenue models is another. Its $$$ pushing this fake news cut the ads and the fake news would disappear overnight. Its just like the yellow journalism that plagued the US in the early 19th century. It got so bad standards had to be put in place to stop all the lies. In fact lies led to the US starting a war. Not making it up either. Its well documented that the sensationalism the media caused surrounding the explosion of the USS Maine led to the Spanish American War. Who knows what can happen in this day in age, and with this administration.

Yea it got Syria and Libya bombed for the lest few years but that was doing the all holy obama adminstration. And before that, the Bush admin with the Iraq war..why no issues with that?

Stringerbell2627d ago

No. I said the Spanish American war, so I'm referring to the Spanish American war 0_o

Stringerbell2627d ago (Edited 2627d ago )

'why no issues with that?'

Who says I dont take issue?

I'm referencing the Spanish American war which predates all your examples by a good century lol Yeah so if I have a problem with it when it happened in the past I also have a problem with it in its current shape and form. The Spanish American war is a perfect example though and probably the first concrete example of the pitfalls of fake news / manipulative headlines leading to a war (for the US a least). Regardless when it happens and who is benefiting off of misinformation, I will always be critical of it.

micx2627d ago

I gotta agree, but even with money out of the picture I still believe there would be fake news, because it's propaganda used to push idealogies and beliefs. Propaganda costs, it doesn't directly make money and isn't meant to make profits in itself. It creates a milieu which can then be used to one's benefit.

Sites like Adsense really need to be more proactive about cutting service to fake news sites. Haven't seen much action since they announced their fight against it.

Stringerbell2627d ago

Those clicks are a helluva drug thats why. Its like FB coming out against 'fake news' and then later on saying well we arent really a venue for news to begin with. Total BS. So while we dont like whats going on, dont throw any sort of journalistic integrity on us.

Dont know if you ever saw the H3H3 video on how certain individuals were stealing content from others and monetizing it. And Facebook did nothing. Because they would rather protect large pages with millions of followers than grow a backbone for the people being taken advantage of.

It seems like yesterday reading headlines of XYZ journalist who plagiarized or lied and their career was ruined. Now nobody cares about lying, it pays better.

annoyedgamer2627d ago

Critical thinking is dangerous to the elitists and establishment which Cook is a part off.

Fake News = anything that makes our corporate dealing look bad.

Just another way to protect the corporate global monopoly.

Speed-Racer2627d ago

Let me guess, in your eyes Donald Trump is a critical thinker that the media is trying to suppress?

Cobra9512627d ago

The Guardian is a leftist publication. While I agree that we need to stem the tide of misinformation, this article's particulars are clearly slanted in favor of their politics.

Deadpooled2627d ago (Edited 2627d ago )

Saw the headline on the bottom of the N4G home page, came here to comment about it until I saw who wrote the article, not surprised them hypocrites would jump on such a bandwagon since their BS has been called out so many times this decade. The Guardian used to be respected but not anymore, turned to gutter journalism like the Daily Mail and the BBC.

Kabaneri2627d ago (Edited 2627d ago )

CNN, BBC, and Univision are killing people's minds.

FlyingFoxy2627d ago

Apple kill peoples wallets with their overpriced and closed tech, also ;)
