the most important reason is of the smatphones because it has become much popular than tablets and the tablets are too large to carry anywhere as the smartphones can be carried anywhere easily.
1) the Phablet- smartphones from the 5+ inch screens or more are a direct handy screen size of a Tablet and a Phone..and with many Phones having a 5.5 inch to 6" screens you pretty much have the base screen size of a 7" tablet almost in your hands at that point anyway if you have a 6" screen smartphone.
2) and With Many Tablets needing a Wifi connection unless you get a tablet through a cellular carrier..at that point you pretty much have a smartphone anyway..and your just pretty much paying for a larger screen in many cases unless its a surface Pro or ultra or somthing like that..and than your pretty much a laptop at that point. Especially in price points.
The other points about not needing to upgrade as much is also quite valid.
Tablets really serve their purpose as a go between a laptop and a PC. And smartphones that are Phablets are making direct strides to divide the consumers need for both a tablet and phablet.
The big screen smartphones did this mainly.
