Supersonic aircraft are loud. Engine noise and transonic ‘booms’ made high speed airliners unwelcome visitors. Langley Research Center engineers are hosting focus groups to determine public annoyance and the space agency is looking into ways to make sonic booms less of a nuisance over land.
