The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Android Lollipop update is now seeding to Verizon handsets.
Speaking as an owner of a phone with a rear-facing speaker, Samantha can tell you just how ridiculously small and weak any media playback sounds. Maybe it’s because we’ve all been conditioned to experience high quality sound playback in recent years with superb sound products and features *ahem* HTC One *ahem*, but hey, it’s 2014. So this is probably why it was a bit surprising that the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge, the new innovative phablet with its screen curved alongside the right edge, had its lone measly little speaker on the rear.
The second half of 2014 proved to be an exciting time for fans of phablet devices. Samsung, the company which arguably started the whole phablet thing with the Note, released not one, but two new Note handsets. In addition to the Note 4 flagship, the company introduced the innovative Note Edge, which kept most of the Note 4's assets, but also added an intriguing curved screen edge to the equation. What's more, Samsung's arch-rival in the mobile space, Apple, also decided to jump on the phablet bandwagon with the launch of the iPhone 6 Plus. This means that lovers of excessively big screens on mobile devices have more choice than ever, and for the first time since the advent of phablets, that choice isn't narrowed down to Android.
The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge is a one-of-a-kind, limited-edition device that stands out with a screen that wraps around one of its edges, hence justifying the ‘Edge’ name. We’ve seen curved-screen phones, and other trickery in devices, but it’s the first time that you get such an ‘edge’ that acts as a secondary display that you can control separately from the main screen. You can use it for notifications, quick shortcuts to apps, as well as a quick ticker for information that you care about - stocks, weather, sport scores, and so on.
I love the look of the curved screen. I was planning to get this after my N3, but ended up with a Moto X as a stopgap to the N5 or S6. I like the promise this shows and hope to see it more fully formed in the next iteration.
