Microsoft will charge for Windows 10 upgrades after one-year freebie offer lapses

Microsoft long ago revealed that current Windows 7 and 8 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free as long as they do so within a year of the operating system’s launch. What wasn’t made clear was what happens after that year passes. Would Microsoft extend the offer in its quest to bring Windows 10 to one billion devices in three scant years? Nope.

In a post to Microsoft’s Australian Partner Network—and first spotted by Neowin—Alex Snelson, a Windows product marketing manager at Microsoft Australia, clarified what will happen after the deadline.

Of course they would charge for it. They said it’s free for one year. What other possibility would happen? Keeping it free? They said this at January 21 "a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch". After that, what’s the opposite of free? Paid. Why are people getting this now? What am I not getting?

It was always the expectation that it would be a charged upgrade after the first 12 months but Microsoft point-blank refused to comment if this was the case for some reason which is what made the situation a little odd. But let's face it, you're right it was always going to be paid.

This is old news. You will still keep Windows 10 if you upgraded within the first year. The OS doesn't suddenly expire after a year. Only the offer to upgrade for free does.

@Soup - On top of your comment, this isn't new news either. They've been telling people this all the time. Not sure why news outlets are now making a big deal of it.

I'm half expecting a subscription model to hit windows 10 as it hit Microsoft Office in the form of 365...

Soupaman663260d ago

I don't think so. Office 365 is not a substitute for office 2013 and now 2016. It was a side product that allows you to use office from any device. There's more online capabilities involved. This is not an easy thing to do with an operating system. There could be a subscription service for an operating system, but it will NOT be for windows 10. Such service would probably be the remote desktop connection improvements. Maybe something like team-viewer. However, windows 10 was confirmed to be free once you have it. It doesn't make sense to upgrade for free and have others to keep paying to use the same product.

You have a point my thinking comes from Microsoft actions in the past. First with xbox live and then again with what they tried to do with the xbox one release (which thankfully failed) it made me worry that after the free year a subscription service could be implimented
Almost forcing a whole group of users who chose to upgrade for free into said subscription model.

But if what you said is true about it being confirmed to be free once you have it is true (and I have no reason to doubt you) then I suppose that's a lot of concern over nothing. I just see how it would make financial sense from a buisness perspective is all and have nothing but conjecture to back my theory up :p

Thanks for the reply

Microsoft has shown itself to be a different company for a few years now. They are embracing open source more. They're adding Office to Android and iPad. They're being more open with the Windows code. It's time to let go of the evil empire stuff. Microsoft,as much as anyone, is trying to push technology forward.

...and just as hungry for the rise of subscription models because it gives them more power over the consumer. Their evil empiring is not in the past.
