The Hidden FM Radio Inside Your Pocket, And Why You Can't Use It

You may not know it but most of today's smartphones have FM radios inside of them. But the FM chip is not activated on two-thirds of devices. That's because mobile makers have the FM capability switched off.

Who listens to the radio anymore? Pandora, spotify and Amazon music make radio stations obsolete.

N0TaB0T3293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

No, Pandora and iHeartRadio are trash that is killing radio.

It's sad that such a basic feature is locked to force pretentious, low-quality radio streaming services that are becoming useless by the years.

fr0sty3293d ago

Did you actually just call Pandora's quality trash compared to FM radio? Seriously?

Speed-Racer3293d ago

Those platforms don't work when you don't have a signal.

Pillsbury13293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

Neither does fm radio, what's ur point?

If you are in the city chances are you will have reception

Speed-Racer3293d ago

@pills - yes, FM has more range than WiFi or cellular data. You can still get an FM signal deep in the wilderness once the line of sight is clear vs a cell tower which has a lower range.

I do a lot of driving for work and I'm always listening to talk radio. News, sports etc all local based stuff.

Pillsbury13293d ago

On demand podcast have replaced the old ways of talk radio, get with the times.

Stringerbell3293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

Yes clearly an on demand podcast is going to tell me about up to date traffic and news.

And NY sports talk based radio is rather good I like listening to Boomer and Carton in the morning so I'll keep on thank you very much.

I get that people out there live in radio wastelands where its other country or da Lord', I'm fortunate enough to live in NYC and I like my options.

i stopped listening to anything made after 2005.

4/8/16/32 beats of electro samples looped, filtered and reverbed for 4-6 minutes with meaningless lyrics is not music.

subtenko3293d ago

It's not the music its you, who cannot find good music. I find stuff from years ago STILL undiscovered as well as new songs discovered and undiscovered by many in most main genres (over 300-some music genres in the world)

Just because mainstream radio blast music you dont like doesn't mean good music isnt out there or that thereis less of it, thats BS. 6 Billion people in the world, Millions if not billions of musicians. Go start finding em, I am and you dont see me trash talk any genres.

(I just dont like heavy grudge metal because the vocals dont have any tone of musicality to me. I listen to metal though)

Very easy to steal too from the looks of it.
More pointless, overpriced attachments to compensate for designer shortsightedness could be a reality in 5 years.

5 futuristic phones that were ahead of their time, but still flopped

Some people mocked the original iPhone when it launched, and the Samsung Galaxy Note provoked much mirth for being too big, but both defied their critics with strong sales and spawned sequels that are still going strong. The phones we’re looking at here had a different fate. They may have pointed the way for the future of smartphones, but they failed to capitalize on it.

Lumia 1020 was definitely the biggest shocker of all. I still remember how I thought it would do great in the markets when it was first announced.
