Opinion: The FCC's Net Neutrality Victory is Anything But

Geoffrey Manne of Wired

The day after the FCC’s net neutrality vote, Washington was downright frigid. I’d spoken at three events about the ruling, mentioning at each that the order could be overturned in court. I was tired and ready to go home.

The first comment of the article is telling about the author

'I want to point out that the author of this article also wrote this paper in 2014 that is in support of the TWC / Comcast Merger'

Gotta get dem hitz.

How many times have you seen articles on N4G like "Top 5 reasons why I'll never play GTA 5" and then the next day you see "Top 5 reasons why I will always play GTA 5" by the same author.

''to outlaw certain conduct (blocking, throttling and paid prioritization). The fact that these practices rarely occur (and may be beneficial when they do) is overlooked.''

Is this guy kidding me? How is blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization beneficial? As far as I know every big website I go to is being throttled/limited. You only need 5mbps to stream videos yet I lag on YouTube and other video websites with a 20mbps connection from TWC. Everyone says all you need is a 20mbps connection to do all these things on the Internet yet I get laggy shit all the time and definitely when gaming. But when I use the TWC TV app which streams in high quality with no lag because they don't fuck up their own streaming service yet every other service lags with lower quality which is just showing how corrupt they are. 20mbps is the new dial up connection and 1gbps is the new standard yet cable companies refuse to upgrade because they are set up all over the US as somehow legal monopolys that can get away with charging twice as much as other countries yet 100 times slower. Here is a video that explains these corrupt bastards and any one who defends them either work for them or are idiots.

"A range of state and local fees apply only to common-carrier telecommunications services—which is what the FCC just made your broadband internet service."

Is this guy bullshitting... I already have a $10 fee from taxes every month on my TWC bill and you are telling me that they are going to charge more because of Net Neutrality? Well if taxes do go up anymore than it just shows how these monopolist internet companies were getting away with their corruption for so long... The US government is on their side.

"To Solve a Problem That Doesn’t Exist"

Oh my god this article is off the charts in stupidity. If you don't think there is a problem with the Internet in the US then YOU are a big part of the problem.

The internet is the mover of economy these days. One would think that it would be a wise investment for a govt to invest in the internet, making access easier for all its citizens. This article speaks contrary to all of that.

On a side note if you want to see a country that has gone beyond the very basic ideas of net neutrality check out what Australia is doing. They've dubbed it the National Broadband Network. Basically the govt there is rolling out the infrastructure nation wide ie a massive public network. And any current or would be ISP provider's can tap into that- true competition and great prices for consumers.

Wait until the corporations cozy up to the government. We will no longer be able to drop the companies we do not like and switch when there are 3 versions of the same BS.

Something needed to be done but drafting the rules behind closed doors was not the way to do it. I am almost certain the corporations will benefit from this.

I hate to break it to you but this was the case already. That is why the overturning of the ban on municipal networks is the HIGHLIGHT of the net neutrality ruling imho.

Because as of right now....

What you are complaining about is already the status quo. Corporations did not want this to be overruled they wanted to be the gatekeepers of the internet , the municipal ruling is a slap in the face to that.

Wheeler says it best:

“You can’t say you’re for broadband and then turn around and endorse limits on who can offer it,” Wheeler said today. “You can’t say, ‘I want to follow the explicit instructions of Congress to remove barriers to infrastructure investment,' but endorse barriers on infrastructure investment. You can’t say you’re for competition but deny local elected officials the right to offer competitive choices."

Bring on the public network.
