Researchers working at the University of Maryland in Baltimore County have developed a new way to boost the performance and longevity of nanoscale lithium-ion batteries that could solve several key bottlenecks in the current designs. So-called nanobatteries use incredibly small structures of less than 100 nanometers as compared to 5-20 micrometers for conventional battery designs. Such batteries can recharge in moments and store dramatically more energy, but fail extremely quickly. The Maryland team thinks it may have found a partial solution to the problem — thanks in part to mollusks.
