Advanced AI robots and religion must never meet one another

Jason Moth writes: "The fact that advanced AI robots might walk among us one day is almost a certainty at this point according to Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and many others. But while some people including the aforementioned ones are warning about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence left unchecked, there are a few who see a lot of opportunities here. No, I’m not talking about some evil mastermind planning to rule the world via advanced AI robots, although that thought did cross my mind on several occasions. Instead, the people I’m referring to are none other than Christian priests who are suggesting that robots should be familiarized to the teachings of Jesus and converted to Christianity when the time comes."

Oh look, another "Religion is bad" post.

Dasteru3527d ago

It isn't saying religion is bad. It is taking a realistic look at how AIs might react to the concept of religion.

Given that AIs would be bound by logic, there is a 99%+ chance they would see right through religion. On the off chance they did believe in it, a likely analytical interpretation would almost certainly cause them to see humanity as a threat and wipe us out.

SilentNegotiator3527d ago

You're right, that sounds perfectly neutral.

coolbeans3527d ago

But that same end-result of trying to decimate humanity could happen if AI's "believed" in a lot of other things not taught by religion:

-human-driven climate change
-national superiority
-etc. etc.

That's why it's seems more reasonable to discuss all the dangers that come with the development of AI rather than the internet equivalent of chumming.

@Silent:

Never claimed to be neutral. Simply stating technical and logical facts. Ignoring reality for the sake of neutrality isn't my style. Or did you think i was quoting the article with the second paragraph? I wasn't. That was my own personal take.

Why give robots information irrelevant to them.
Just obey orders even that is more than enough because corrupted governments will use them thats for sure.
Easy solution create more powerful robots and their only purpose is to keep thinking robots in check.

The point of the article is to rebut Christian priests who say that robots should be familiarised with the teachings of Jesus.

The argument for why is pretty simple: Christian robots serve whatever they have been told god is, and not humans.

For example, I can already think of two problematic scenarios:

1. The master does something which might be wrongly interpreted as "sinful" (arguing with parents) and their robot decides to punish them for it.

2. The robot is programmed to make their owner happy, and so being taught that humans go to heaven, they try to kill their masters.

The point is pretty straightforward (though I wonder why it even needs to be made as I thought it was a given); robots should not be taught to assume religious beliefs by default (though it's harmless for them to be aware of them).

The only god a robot should know and believe in is their master.

Lord_Sloth3525d ago

That's all well and good but if the Robot follows what he's taught god wants than that means he obeys the 10 commandments. Thou Shalt Not Kill so he's not gonna murder somebody to send them to heaven.

There's also that whole "judge not lest ye be judged" thing.

sonic9893526d ago (Edited 3526d ago )

That's just stupid what does religion have to do with all of this.
And the funny people making fun of religious people thinking they are superior thinkers lol.
Robot A.I doesnt need to understand anything other than its objective and we know governments are bad a corrupted and they will most likely use them to enforce their power and control and continue to spread poisons in our brains and minds thinking its ideal XD.
Sad sad, if you think for a split second that they will be used in our favor the normal people then naive isnt the word to describe your thinking abilities.

Addressing Asimov's Laws in programming is always treacherous territory.

I know individuals working in aerospace who have to address nuances like how a plane should crash to save the largest number of individuals.

It makes for crazy speculation at times, but people don't realize just how much of our lives are already in the hands of machines without introducing religion to super intelligent AI.

Although, oddly enough Asimov's Laws can already be in a way seen as a form of religion.
