Why in the world would we be needing elevators that go sideways?

Because you can engineer buildings differently, potentially more efficiently too. Skyscrapers are getting so big now that the lifts in them have to be extreme machines just to make the building efficient enough.

If you can have multiple lifts in a single shaft but they can move and get out of the way of each other, travel sideways or at angles you greatly increase the efficiency of the building.
